JCPenney is trying to drum up business by offer free headshots.

I can't believe the portrait studios are still open. Do they even do any business these days? Are there still portrait studios run by other companies anywhere else? Didn't Sears have these at one time?

Some portrait studios are open, but many have closed due to a lack of traffic. I know my two local ones are gone. They are third party-run.

The article indicates the studios are all run by a 3rd party called Lifetouch.

I think Lifetouch does a lot of school portraits. If those are still a thing.

They also did (and probably still do) things like making photo books for organizations, of course hoping that while people are sitting for a photo for that, they will buy some for themselves as well :)

Some of that may have come from acquiring Olan Mills a decade plus ago, as they did similar things along with their portrait studios in stores (in fact, that may have been the name on these studios at one point).
