Re: Walmart completes sale of Asda

Walmart hasn't had a lot of success internationally outside of Canada, Mexico, and China (where they grew more organically as opposed to purchasing an existing chain).

Re: Kroger closing 2 QFC stores due to $4 Hazard pay

Weren't Fred Meyer stores full supercenters and Fred Meyer Marketplace stores were grocery stores?

I thought that the Marketplace was the differentiator (unless Fred Meyer doesn't use that anymore).

Re: Fry’s Electronics out of business

They've been on a downward trend since about 2016 or so (I wanted to buy a Stereo receiver there but their pricing and selection was starting to go down so I ended up getting it from Amazon instead). The problem is that in the end Amazon sold everything Fry's did for about 1/2 the price and once Ama...

Re: Self-checkout and Shrink

I love using Scan and Go myself at Sams Club. Its super easy and when the lines are long, you just walk out. I've actually done the opposite and charged myself for something twice by accident and the person noticed it at the door (she counted the items in my cart, I had 8 and my receipt said 9). I ...

Re: Amazon Fresh coming to Sacramento (Citrus Heights)

Long ago this shopping center had an Alpha Beta. This is a really good spot for the store based on being a central location with access to a lot of roads. This is a rather downtrodden shopping center. The Rite Aid doesn't do much business and I'm surprised it is still open but they closed the other...

Re: Kroger closing: Nokomis, IL

I've been to 4 Hen Houses: Westwood, Corinth Square, Leawood, and Olathe and Hen House, to me, feels like a high-end operator stuck in the 1990s. The décor, pricing, selection, and services seem to be what a high-end operator would have started in the 1990s but hasn't really evolved beyond that lik...

Re: Kroger closing: Nokomis, IL

FWIW, AWG does an unusually good job at segmentation in Kansas City which would tend to crowd out an expansion by a Kroger/Dillon or Safeway/Albertsons. They have (as stated) operators of low-end, mid-range (Price Chopper) and high-end (Hen House) . Both Price Chopper and Hen House are very plausib...

Re: Kroger closing: Nokomis, IL

I lived in Kansas City 30 years ago and shopped frequently at the Dillons on 63/Quivira in Shawnee. They also had at least a couple stores in Olathe. At that point the Dillons was quite a big store--even had a travel agency in the lobby. Think, though, that they didn't have any other stores in KC t...

Re: Could Kroger be preparing for a Florida move-in?

Kroger got lucky in Atlanta. They were in sad shape in the 70s, much like their most northern markets, from what I understand. Superstores helped them survive in the short run but it was mostly the self-destruction of Colonial, the usual problems of A&P and the sale of Food Giant that propelled...

Re: Kroger Murfreesboro, TN Middle TN Road Partially Closing

This is an interesting one. They are closing the store, but they are keeping the pharmacy and fuel center open. I think they've done this before where they keep the fuel center open in a closed location, but keeping the pharmacy open is an interesting idea. https://www.dnj.com/story/money/2021/01/2...
