Re: Tesco Considering Sale of Asian Businesses

Hubris is one thing (and there was a fair amount of it with respect to Tesco's history in the US) but the thing is that Tesco had run out of growth opportunities in its home territory so in order to continue to grow they had to look to new territories. It's the same impulse that led J. Sainsbury to...

Re: JC Penney Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Most of the JCPenney closings don't seem too surprising, a lot of them seem to be in small-town malls or other B-class centers. The closest one to me (or Houston, for that matter) is West Hills Mall in Huntsville. It already is losing Palais Royal (don't know if it was even marked for conversion) an...

Re: Food Lion To Buy 62 Bi-Lo / Harvey's Stores From Southeastern Grocers

Well, this means Super BI-LO at the Beach is toast, which featured an unusual logo with the dash between BI and LO with a sun wearing sunglasses. I suppose the remaining BI-LO stores in SC and NC might be rebranded as Winn-Dixie, marking a return to the area for the first time since 2005. It probabl...

Re: McDonalds and re-opening inside

Less than a year before the riots (and COVID) began, Minneapolis actually prohibited drive-throughs in new construction, citing vague health and environmental reasons. Guess we'll see that repealed soon.

Re: Sprouts outlines strategy for future

They probably want to go the Trader Joe's route. Trade Joe's stores are small, but have no deli or service departments. The stores are tiny, but are very profitable. Sprouts could try to copy the Trader Joe's format, but they will have to get rid of the excessive rows of vitamins and health and bea...

Re: Sprouts outlines strategy for future

Most of the Sprouts I've visited have been around 30k square feet. Unless they dispense with service departments entirely, you can't go lower than 30k square feet before significant cuts are made in center store or the department sizes. With the exception of stores extremely large to begin with (100...

Re: United TX acquires August's Pies

Apparently, it actually ceased production relatively recently, and they acquired back the rights to it, probably making it an exclusive store brand in the process. Didn't they do this with some tortillas or tortilla chips a while back? From what I could tell, they had added a tortilla line to their...

Re: Stores Returning to Regular Hours

H-E-B went from 8 am to 8 pm to 7 am to 10 pm. CVS and Walgreens seem to have been operating at close at midnight for the last few weeks now as normal (due to my schedule, I've observed when they shut off a lot of the lights around that time).

Re: Pier 1 Imports Files for Bankruptcy Protection

I am not sure I've ever actually bought anything from Pier 1 I think there is/was one at least one that I know of I'm going to say in the Schenectady/Rotterdam area but don't quote me on that. Think I recall seeing it in one of the plazas there. Not even sure it's survived to this point. Don't reme...
