Re: H-E-B expanding to West Texas

I think as long as Albertsons allows United/Market Street to stay independent, it will combat HEB well in its home markets. If Albertsons starts trying to run United/Market Street in the Safeway like fashion they are running much of their chain in, it will not work out too well. This is not to say ...

Re: Walmart observations

I have noticed the lines too. I should say "line." As early as 6 PM in a Supercenter, one checkout open (tobacco register) and then the 14+ self checkouts on grocery side (ones on GM side closed already). But they have labor dollars to have two "greeters" stand at the door and want to scan your rec...

There are no H-E-B stores proper in Dallas. The closest thing are far fringe communities like Cleburne.

Re: Is the end near at Sears?

My favorite pic is the one about transitioning the sales floor to a new look. It is called "closed." Considering how successful they were in the 1970's and '80s it is very sad to see this. I agree with how sad looking the remaining stores are looking. It amazes me when you see hints of how busy som...

Re: Lord and Taylor sold for $100m to clothing rental company

If I recall, at the time, Lord and Taylor was suffering under May Company with poor merchandising, at least in several locations, and the concept was probably the "upscale" store to the May Company brands (in theory, anyway). As to why May didn't convert it, Macy's has always been pretty touchy wher...

Re: Lord and Taylor sold for $100m to clothing rental company

A relatively unknown company out of San Francisco buying Lord & Taylor for a huge sum seems pretty far-fetched, and an even bigger question is how that can be integrated with their existing model. It sounds more like HBC is making an investment in Le Tote.

Re: McDonald's drive thru setup

Have noticed the newer and remodeled McDonald's in my area all have the double speaker setup. These restaurants have ordering and pickup windows, and a second pickup window out in the dining room. At one location here have been asked at times to drive up to the second pickup window when there was a...

Re: Forever 21 Bankruptcy

I totally forgot about those huge Mervyn's stores. Why did Forever 21 choose such huge stores? They do not even have enough clothing to fill all that space. Do they even sell mens clothing? I noticed that they seem to love 2 story stores as well. They used to have a small mall store near me, but th...

Re: Walmart closes St. Paul (MN) store on University Ave.

Walmart was probably targeting supermarket chains at that time. They wanted to take on the supermarket chains and run the other supermarkets out of business. It was a miscalculation on Walmart's end. Customers did not like Walmart's Neighborhood Markets due to the lack of certain items. Often there...

Re: Forever 21 Bankruptcy

Their Mervyn's stores, which approach some 70k square feet, are probably among the biggest. They also opened big stores in high rent areas, like New York City with a 90k square foot flagship in the former Virgin Megastore (and some other space). All those spaces are way too big (always have been) fo...
