Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
I thought Bob Mariano retired but he is all over the article about this grand opening: http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-bronzeville-marianos-sidebar-1011-biz-20161010-story.html Notes that remodels are being put off due to Kroger's cutting of capital expenditures recently, but still planni...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
Kroger operated in Chicago until the early 1970's when they sold out to Dominick's. In fact, the Park Ridge Mariano's was a Dominick's that replaced a Dominick's store that started as a Kroger. This brings to mind an intriguing, though highly unlikely possibility: Since the Roundy's acquisition reu...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
If they are handling it how they did in the past, the Kroger brand items will filter in on "slow moving" categories first. Items like drug, glass jars of red vinegar, glass jars of cherries, etc. Roundy's brand strikes me as ripe to be discontinued. First off, there is no store named Roun...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
I intended to post about my excursion to Mariano's when visiting Chicago in August. There was a mix of Roundy's and Kroger brands.bm10k wrote:Looks Like They are finally bringing in some Kroger Labels. In this week Copps/Pick n' Save ad They're promoting Simple Truth like crazy

Re: Integration of Albertsons and Safeway
My local VONS has finally enabled the chip readers on its pin pads. I was in there this evening and inserted rather than swiped for the first time. I was there Sunday and still paid the old-fashioned way.

Re: Keils - San Diego/Clairemont lost lease, closing
You would think with all of the apartment buildings nearby there would be sufficient business to sustain a large store. It makes me wonder whether VONS closed that location because they couldn't expand.storewanderer wrote:I always wondered about that store and why a larger chain wasn't in that particular location.

Re: Keils - San Diego/Clairemont lost lease, closing
This seems to be part of a two store chain. What was this store before Keils? Interesting to see it closing as it appears to have been a well liked store. It sounds like Sprouts is taking the spot over. Most people should at least be happy about that. Better than some of the other alternatives taki...

Re: Integration of Albertsons and Safeway
For a few years I bought Open Nature English muffins at VONS, because they did not contain high-fructose corn syrup, as did the Safeway Kitchens. The other day I noticed that the Open Nature branded muffins were no longer carried, but the Signature Kitchens muffins no longer contained high-fructose ...

Re: Breaking: HEB buys 6 Minyard Sun Fresh stores in DFW
Yeah, this looks to be a Skaggs model, likely the original Skaggs Albertsons partnership or maybe an early Skaggs Alpha Beta. They were quite large for their time, but that time is gone. It became an Albertsons in 1992 when ASC exited the market after briefly rebranding them as Jewel-Osco (yes, thi...
