Re: Macy's Neighborhood Store Watch

It would make perfect sense to operate the second-tier stores under a different name. They certainly have plenty to choose from. However, Macy's is so enamored with Macy's that it won't do it. I would argue they already are doing this- it is called Macy's Backstage. It just so happens to be within ...

Re: Macy's Neighborhood Store Watch

... So...if the idea was to rid Macy's of the "second-class" stores that made it hard to be "all things to all shoppers" (or whatever), why not spin off those stores as a new name and marketing? If they were still owned by Macy's Inc., then they could still share certain back of...

Re: Macy's Neighborhood Store Watch

...Those exurban Chicago/Wisconsin stores were always weird for Marshall Fields, being built more as "since we're dominant here in Chicagoland we'd better not leave any openings/holes" than a good fit for them.... The only Wisconsin store Field's built was in Wauwatosa (Mayfair). It is a ...

Re: Macy's Neighborhood Store Watch

Macy's is largely undoing Terry Lundgren's handiwork. Legacy Macy's did not operate in second-tier malls and in second-tier markets. IMO, converting all the nameplates to Macy's diluted their brand and attempting to homogenize all of the stores simply alienated shoppers. That said, three stores I kn...

Re: Harris Teeter/Kroger integration

...Interesting story going on down with their Chicago operations. Bob retired from Roundy's, started his own chain, and Roundy's Mariano's growth has stagnated compared to the mid-2010s..... IMO, it would have happened anyway as the novelty wore off and Roundy's went deeper and deeper in the red. T...

Re: Harris Teeter/Kroger integration

Speaking of which, how were PnS/Smith's weak and how did Kroger change their operations?... Having lived in Chicago and visited Milwaukee very frequently I can tell you that Pick 'n' Save was less "broken" than it was fit for the low expectations of the Milwaukee market. They started out ...

Re: Is 2021 finally the end for Sears/Kmart?

I'm buying lottery tickets and going to Vegas if Walmart actually opens a store in one of the five NYC boroughs! But seriously NYC seems hostile to Walmart and I don't see it meeting Walmart's financial needs ie run it as cheaply as possible. If a "discounter" takes over those spaces the ...

Re: Costco installing self-checkouts at more locations

And the lack of membership enforcement still baffles me as to why Costco thinks these machines are a good idea. Why become a member (which generates most of Costco's income) when I can just borrow someones card and hop on through the self checkout without any checks in place? I thought about this a...
