Re: St. Louis visit--leisurely stroll through newest Dierbergs' and Global Foods Market
If you want to see a stocked liquor department, you should visit the Dierbergs at the Lake of the Ozarks. It is bananas. I've not been to that new Crestwood Dierbergs but the one on Manchester in Des Peres to the north of there is excellent, as is the newer Schnucks down the road. It would be intere...

Re: Hy-Vee buying Strack & Van Til
I'm really surprised by this acquistion, as Hy-Vee is usually a builder, not an acquirer. However, it seems like a good cultural fit. I don't think Hy-Vee has eyes on the larger Chicago market. They're not a union store. In fact, I gather that at least some of the S&VT stores are union shops, a ...

Re: ALDI to acquire Winn-Dixie
In Missouri, they sell a handful of local brands. They have for years. They even have some local microbrews. To be honest though, no one goes there for that. They go there because their store brand products are just as good or better than the name brand. I have concerns about them carrying more name...

Re: ALDI to acquire Winn-Dixie
"Remember that Aldi operates with a mindset that is its own religion, and the corporate offices are all fanatics. They firmly believe that their little, low volume stores are superior to the big supermarket chains with tens of thousands of items which are "obsolete" and "dinosaur...

New King Soopers in CO Springs
Looks like a new Marketplace just opened, with two more in the works. Doesn't appear to be slowing down, but I'm not knowledgeable about Colorado Springs. Maybe there aren't many Safeways there, but it sounds like Falcon has a new one nearby. Also, the picture of the store with the "King Sooper...

Re: Maverik Purchases Kum & Go
I think that the heir of the Krause family that owned K&G is a bit detached from reality. The gas stations got in the way of his spending money on Italian soccer teams and vineyards. My guess is he doesn't really relate to the average Iowan. The Kum & Go stores here in Missouri were original...

Re: Hy Vee changes
I worry about Hy-Vee. They seem to have taken their eyes off the prize and are slipping. They seem to think they're more remarkable than they really are. Their focus the past year seems to be their new market entries in TN, KY and IN, which make no sense. I've suggested before that Hy-Vee should ex...

Re: Schnucks and Canada Private Label
Schnucks' private label offerings have greatly expanded in the past couple of years. They have brought in quite a few unique items. Or at least unique to the Midwest. I feel like I see more people shopping at their locations in Central Missouri more than in the past. You know, back when they acquire...

Re: ALDI to add 70 new stores by next year
In Missouri (where they've been around since the late 70's, I believe), there's an Aldi in pretty much any town with a population greater than 10,000. Pretty much any town of that size will have a Walmart Supercenter, Aldi and some store most likely supplied by AWG at a minimum. Now they are going a...
