Re: Walmart observations

I find it interesting there are still non-Supercenter Walmarts even in existence anymore. I think the last non-Supercenter stores around here were replaced with all-new supercenters around 2002-2003 at the latest, even in the smaller towns. The familiar 1980s style buildings have all been since conv...

Re: JC Penney Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

I guess we will see what happens. This may be a real estate play more than anything else. JCP's days will probably still be numbered but it will be a slower process now vs. closing them all up at once. I agree Macy's has its issues, but its strengths are numerous compared to JCP. It *is* a real est...

Re: Retail design trends

Our Sears store actually had wood floors, only in the section where the washers and dryers were. Which is odd, since that doesn't fit with that theme. It could be that was originally a different dept, but as far as I can remember it was the same thing (and I had been going there since it was new). T...

Re: Retail design trends

And of course Walmart uses wood in their clothing departments only from what I've seen. The newer wood floors they're using in their stores when they do concrete have more of a grippy feel while the older wood look floors were glossy just like the tiles. I saw them putting them down one night and t...

Re: Walmart observations

The emergency exit doors are never to be used by employees because it sets off the fire alarm. It must have been a shoplifter and security probably was chasing them. It takes a manager to turn off the alarm. I thought it was very strange. But they don't actually set off the fire alarm, at least in ...

Re: Halloween Stores & Halloween Sales

Even in the Spring, there was uncertainty about where we'd be in the fall and I'm sure the purchasing for seasonal fall/winter merchandise has reflected this. There has been a shift in the packaging of Halloween candy in recent years, so that the emphasis is on fall motifs rather than necessarily a...

Re: Walmart observations

Went to Walmart tonight. The security gates were all left opened. The whole set of self checkouts on the north end of the store was shut down so everyone was forced to use the set near the pharmacy entrance and the line was very long. I decided not to buy anything because of that and actually exited...

Re: Retail design trends

Publix has used terrazzo flooring since their "Dream Store" opened in 1940- it was one of Mr. George's key tenets of design, and it's remained since. As for the striped floors - I thought they were gray actually, but that may stem from 70s/early 80s instances. It's definitely nice to see Publix con...

Re: Office Depot closures continue

Office Depot is a place I often tend to forget, although I did get my printer there. I shopped more often at the Office Max when it was open.

Re: Halloween Stores & Halloween Sales

Back to Halloween stores, I guess it is possible Spirit did team up with Goodwill in order to continue to run a store here. Still at this point, seems they could easily open in the former Kmart or even now, Sears, and have lots more space, vs Goodwill where the selection is very condensed vs a typi...
