Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

So the backrooms are STUFFED FULL in both Reno and Sparks. The stores are closing on or BY April 28 (some employees think they could be closed any second). So I asked what is happening to the stuff in the backroom. I was told they are going to pick it all up and nothing more is going to be stocked....

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

Sparks 99 Only was told their last day will be April 28. They had previously been told June 3. There is still a LOT of product in the backroom at this store. They are not making much effort to get it out onto the sales floor. I am wondering if they will just pick it up and sell it in SoCal. It appe...

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

ClownLatch, There's a really good write up in today's LA Times about the fall of 99 Cents Only. * the company's assets are fully leveraged; * losses & cash burn rate are accelerating; * it has desperately sought out a buyer(s) and/ or new investors for quite awhile; * it has looming financial ob...

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

ClownLatch, It’s prwtty clear the chain is losing money and had been for quite awhile. I don’t think there’s any real estate left to sell — an article published late last year mentioned that they had sold the Commerce property out of desperation to raise cash, and it was the last remaining asset ava...

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

I missed it, but they did file for bankruptcy. I haven’t been following the news, but they’ve been mulling bankruptcy for two months due to cash shortages. One report (paywall) suggests their foot traffic declined sharply last year after it began raising prices (out of necessity). If they did then ...

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

Sad to see them go. I’ve spent by far more time in their stores through the years than any other retailer. 99 was a life saver for me in my 20s (into my 30s). It allowed me to have nice things and eat healthy in an era when the Great Recession derailed my professional career and saw me take on a jo...

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

Let's face it, this is a "hail Mary" desperate attempt to put together a partial buyout when there is no bankruptcy involved. These private equity folks obviously have the plan to cash out everything they can and write off all the rest as a massive loss against their taxes. They notably d...

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

I think they'd have to make some pretty significant changes. 99 Only is a lot different than these stores. The greater focus on groceries and consumables are why 99 Only was so high traffic. Taking the 99 Only food/consumables/seasonal program and putting this general merchandise program on top of ...

Re: 99 CENT ONLY closing

He's actually the current CEO of Pic 'N' Save Bargains. His two currently open stores are probably the best clue on how he'd run the former 99 Cents Only stores. https://pnsbargains.com/ https://maps.app.goo.gl/Jyw59kqHZYnas2bH9 https://maps.app.goo.gl/snDP6hsszSogKQ4Q9 I think they'd have to make ...
