Re: Pavilions?

After the Haggen debacle it is now a Gelson's, but apparently struggling. It was one of the locations they quickly opened as a Gelsons and later remodeled / downsized. Still Gelson's, but still doesn't feel like a "real" newer Gelson's, like Manhattan Beach, which was built as Gelson's from the beg...

Re: What exactly happened with Kroger?

Ralphs had some pretty marginal stores around San Diego and I think rather than try and make them work they opted to just shut them down. A number of locations had late 90's interiors and needed remodels. I think the decision was made to close rather than continue to run a run down low volume store...

I think the very small Pacific Beach Store is working okay for Gelson's. Nicely remodeled too. Very small store though.
Yeah, it's a former Alpha Beta

Re: Pavilions?

Interesting. I grew up in the La Costa area and I remember when the La Costa Vons (El Camino Real & Aviara Pkwy) opened in the early '90s, it was an absolute REVELATION. The town was buzzing about the Panda Express (inside the store!! So convenient and unheard-of at the time), big bakery that used ...

Re: Retail design trends

Then there was the whole "earth tones" trend done in the late 90's/2000's, inspired by Whole Foods or Wild Oats. Albertsons did this with their "Blue & Green Awnings" decor. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrambojr/37332891556/in/photolist-YSYQ15-BR8Y93-YSYPWs-TufAqd-anM7Mx-NmYZE1-YXaQKv-BR8XT3-2gd3eC...

The Carrs brand is solely used in the Anchorage metro, while the Safeway brand is used in the rest of Alaska.

Re: Pavilions?

ACI should expand the Pavilions brand in San Diego and convert the Vons stores in Mission Hills and La Jolla (Pearl & Girard) to Pavilions. The La Jolla Vons was built in 1998, replacing an old Safeway Marina, getting Lifestyle around 2005. The Mission Hills/Hillcrest Vons was redeveloped from an ol...

Re: What exactly happened with Kroger?

I wonder what will happen to the remaining Ralphs in San Diego... They are down to 20 stores in the county, with a handful of closures done over the past few years. Kroger has remodeled some Ralphs here, but they haven't built a new store in the county since 2007 (the Fresh Fare in 4S Ranch, near Ra...

Kroger's Delta Division should be preparing for Publix's western expansion into western Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky. Where Kroger exits, Publix enters.
Is Publix seriously expanding into Arkansas, Kentucky, and even Missouri?
