I was actually at that store (visiting family in Colorado) back in January. I thought it was quite nice, and the Whole Foods a block away is really nice too. And agreed, it's very much like the other mainstream Kroger stores I've been to -- even not that different from the single Mariano's location ...

Remember, with the exception of Northern California, there's barely any new territory that Kroger will gain with Albertsons anyway. (You're kidding yourself if you think they want Austin or Baton Rouge). The entire PA/Northeast is gained territory. I don't know why Kroger wants it... they're taking...

I don't know this area at all. Is this an area Safeway would want these stores in? Looks like they're not in that area, and they bought two Shoppers stores a couple years ago. Feels like this might be a result of the integration with Whole Foods -- but it strikes me as a major announcement of defeat without actually closing the stores.
