That would explain it. I vividly remember seeing the sign on the road frontage but never saw the store itself.

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area
This is most interesting. I've never heard of Cub but then haven't been to the midwest in decades.
But lets be realistic, if the chains had NOT made money during the pandemic would they still be keeping these stores open?

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area
What was I thinking? This is from Wikipedia: "Dart acquired the remainder of [SFW] in 1997 after exercising a complicated buy-sell agreement with the Herman family. Dart's intention was to force the Herman family into purchasing the shares of the company back after Dart experienced infighting a...

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area
[snip]For a time, prior to Richfood buying them out, the Hafts owned Shoppers whole. I do wonder where the Chantilly Total Beverage was. Wasn't it the Haft's taking over all of Shopper's that triggered some sort of anti-trust problem which is what forced most of the stores to be sold or closed? IIR...

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area
Yes, the Haft's owned Dart Drug, Crown Books and Trak Auto. One of the sons had a temp agency, can't remember the name offhand. Herbert started Total Beverage but IIRC only two opened, one in Chantilly and one in Woodbridge. And of course Haft owned half of Shoppers Food Warehouse. You are right tha...

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area
I notice that this shopping center no longer has a grocery store, I thought this was where Giant was but I think that's in a plaza further to the east. I am very anxious to go to the 2nd & Charles Bookstore sometime, and also stop at the Aldi where Shoppers Food Warehouse used to be... Thanks fo...

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area
Boy, did I miss a few stores!
Just out of curiosity was the Chantilly store, I don't remember any in the area - just the one halfway between Herndon and Chantilly in Floris (an unincorporated part of Fairfax County) which is still operational.

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area
Bit late to the party... At this time (September 2021) there are only four Food Lions left in northern VA: One store in south Leesburg (the northern store closed, both stores had been Blooms) Two stores in Sterling (one was a Bottom Dollar and the other a Bloom, both reverted back to Food Lion's) On...

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?
I would say Publix would have a far easier time of it in Winchester/Front Royal than they would in Northern VA.BatteryMill wrote: ↑August 30th, 2021, 10:49 pmIf so, what do you think about sending Publix out to Winchester/Front Royal? Trying to stay on topic here, sorry.

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?
Correct, considering the town would have likely been large enough for a standard grocery then. Just an FYI, Safeway's last building in Purcellville was constructed in 1968. It is likely that the chain had a smaller store closer to the town center. I'm surprised the Leesburg store is running the way...
