Re: Mall Pet Stores & Chain Pet Stores
I remember a fairly good-sized independent pet store in Rockville, MD back in the 80's-90's (no idea if its still there). Had all sorts of critters including a large tank full of piranha (which are illegal to own but these were grandfathered in). Despite numerous signs that the piranha were NOT for ...

Re: Food shortages?
I was at the Leesburg Aldi this weekend and, believe it or not, for the first time in 4-5 months they have Applewood Sausage back on the shelf!
No idea where's it been but glad to have it back - bought a lot to blackmail my brother into making homemade pizza!

Re: Gas Price-Zone Price
My father told me about the long gas lines during the Arab Oil Embargo. The lines today are nothing compared to what it was like in the 1970s. I lived through that. Lines were long, in fact they set up an even/odd system where if the last number on your tag was even (0-2-4-6-8) you got gas on even ...

Re: Gas Price-Zone Price
The exact same thing is happening here in northern VA as well. Gas prices jumped some 60 cents between Sunday and Monday, the average area price is now about $4/gallon. Luckily I topped off just a few days earlier for $3.35/gallon. I have absolutely ZERO clue as to why this is happening, price goug...

Giant Food in Manassas has Relocated
Just an FYI. My brother and I went to MacKay Books in Manassas this past Wednesday and we were both surprised to see the Giant Food Store on 234 @ Lomond Drive (Westgate Plaza) was gone with the store empty and the facade removed. This came as a shock to me as back in 1988 a list of the Top 10 Highe...

I wasn't aware there was a K Mart on Guam. But then again it opened 20 years after I was there. I find it interesting that attitudes towards the Japanese have changed, but then again the generation that lived under their rule from 1942 until 1944 are now gone... The Leesburg store closed in 2003 whi...

Re: Crucial times for Shoppers
I for one adored Shoppers Food's doughnuts, a good value for the price. If someone brought doughnuts to work odds were good they were from Shoppers. At first Shoppers carried a lot of off-brands including Big Valu Corn Chips which were just as good as the name brand and a lot cheaper. It was later w...

Re: Discussion: Convenience stores / gasoline retailers
I'm in northern VA. When a new gas station in the area opens (and in particular if it's a chain moving or expanding into the area) they set their gas prices a LOT lower than their competition for about six weeks or so, as my brother says "getting your business and hopefully your loyalty." ...

Re: Albertsons’ Soaring Prices
Harris-Teeter does much the same, buy 2 get 3 free. But many times even 60% off is still not a great price. You really need to know the average everyday prices to know when a sale is really a bargain or not... The first five items ring up at normal price, then at the end when you hit the total butt...
