Re: Kohl's To Open 100 Small Format Stores

Kohl's Hometown! I can just imagine it now. Maybe they can even find some Alco and Pamida buildings to fill up. What could possibly go wrong? /s

Well, they outlasted their old rival Prange Way by 23 years.

Re: Shopko files for bankruptcy

Shopko's Wisconsin home turf isn't being spared in this round of closures, that's for sure. In fact, all of the Shopko locations I used to frequent in Madison and Manitowoc are on the list. Since the company had my e-mail address on file for their loyalty program (grumble grumble), I received this h...

Re: Five Guys

Back when I lived in Madison WI, there were two Five Guys locations at my disposal. One was a downtown restaurant housed in an old building on the State Street pedestrian strip, with plenty of aesthetic charm and brisk foot traffic from the university. It was good. The other restaurant was housed in...

Re: Shopko closing 39 stores

I'm surprised that they're only closing one store on their Wisconsin home turf. I don't know how much future is left for this chain, though. Shopko Hometown was probably a mistake in the first place: These stores couldn't have done large volumes, and if Pamida and Alco couldn't keep them going, why ...

Re: Sears/Kmart Death Watch 2017

Sears *was* an online retailer. The Spring 1993 annual catalog contained instructions for ordering merchandise by computer via the Prodigy, GEnie, and CompuServe online services. And since Sears owned a stake in Prodigy, you could buy the service itself from the catalog, too! Sears took all this, an...

Re: HHGregg looking at strategic alternatives

I hadn't even heard of HHGregg until they swooped in and scooped up the leases of some bygone Circuit City stores half a decade ago. If Circuit City couldn't stay in business with these store locations, why did HHGregg think it could in places where they lacked any sort of competitive niche, name re...

Re: Ahold-branded Cheese-It's found in Garland, TX Kroger (and other similar distribution oddities)

I once saw Giant Eagle butter at Kroger, under the same circumstances. It's no question why these things happen: Suppliers make private-label products under contract for multiple brands, and occasionally the wrong packaging will be used. As far as I know Kroger still makes its own crackers, but Krog...
