New Amazon Grocery Chain

More news outlets are reporting on an Amazon grocery store chain that will have fresh departments accessible to consumers and basically center store in a large "backroom" where customers will make center store selections on an app and then these items will be brought to consumers at checkout (simila...

Re: Kroger: Fee for cash back with PIN Debit at some locations

One of the chains here (Price Chopper/Market 32 - NY based) has charged a fee for quite some time - I was able to find a comment from 2010, and it may be even further back than that. Interesting, so this is perhaps a more common practice than I thought. I guess I use Debit so rarely (WinCo...) and ...

Re: Dillards

Historically, Dillard's has stuck around in dying malls. If Dillard's was the only anchor, it would stick around despite the mall's clear failure (see: Harding Mall) but if it wasn't, it was usually the second to go (based on observations, the dead mall pattern in the late 2000s was JCPenney first,...

Re: Albertsons/Safeway 2018 & 2019: Openings and Closings

I think it is a given Kroger isn't about to move into a 50k square foot 27 year old store. Whole Foods could be a concern, or subdividing over to Sprouts. If they own both properties I don't think they will want to lease it to a grocery chain at all. Is Hobby Lobby still building stores LOL? For a ...

Re: Safeway San Mateo remodel (non lifestyle)

New Safeway in Sacramento (Crocker) that opened recently has a layout almost identical to that Pleasant Hill Albertsons/Lucky... pretty funny. Layout is nothing like any current era Safeway. Maybe like an early 80's Safeway. Not sure I've ever seen Safeways before without large wall space for produ...

Re: Albertsons/Safeway 2018 & 2019: Openings and Closings

I've got another Arizona store closure to report: Safeway: 11275 E Vía Linda, Scottsdale, AZ 85259 This is a Lifestyle 1.0 store that is across the street from an Albertsons turned Haggen turned Albertsons. It's in a wealthy neighborhood and I'd imagine both stores were profitable but the Albertson...

Re: Signs of trouble at Target?

People sometimes freak out at a $15 minimum wage. But keep in mind that if adjusted for inflation it would be $21.16 based on it's highest value (at a time when income inequality was a fraction of what it is now). The federal minimum wage has not increased since 2009. Spot on!!!!! This problem exte...

Re: Consumer Reports' Supermarket Rankings

Four of the top five are expensive specialty stores. Trader Joe's is just in a class by themselves. And the bottom five are bland mass merchants with one of them having more sales than the top five combined. People say they like one thing but in reality most people vote with their wallets. It's tru...
