Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million

Pick N Save has a bad reputation and the decision has to be made to fix those stores by adding labor and improving execution. I don't think they need a lot of major remodeling type work (unlike how Smiths was) but some little cosmetic upgrades will help some locations. I know Kroger can do this. Th...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million

I think Jewel did not do too well in WI back in 2007 (much lower store volumes than the stores down around Chicago did)... They didn't do well at all. I did a Google search on Jewel in Milwaukee and the following came up: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/milw.general/pHaP8MBSc7o I forgot abo...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million

I think I already saw they are rebranding Copp's to Pick N Save. That would appear to demonstrate ongoing plans to keep using that name. Frankly, I don't think the Pick N Save name has much value, but, perhaps best to not rock the apple cart with a rebranding just yet. ... Pick 'n Save has been aro...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million

Sometimes, the vibe in two different markets in the same division can be different. In San Diego, Ralphs stores are generally very, vey nicely maintained and clean. Obviously well taken care of for years and years. In LA, not so much. Several look like they have been redecorated but not truly remod...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million

It is easy for people on the outside of situations to generalize and think "we can change all those wayward Smiths, and Ralphs to Kroger and people won't care so much. Heck, the stores already run ads, private labels, and have store interiors that are identical to a Kroger. We will even let them ke...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million

They were planning to convert Jewel to Albertsons. That would have taken place by 2001. Acme was to be converted in 2000 also. The plan was to have Albertsons as a single national grocery banner. I assure you the source I received that information from was very close to the situation. Of course aft...

Re: Publix expanding to Virginia

(The last time I bought a hoagie at Giant, which used to be made in the deli, I noticed the packaging was different....turns out they were now shipped in from California of all places!) Was it actually shipped from there, or maybe just the company's main address? Like we've seen the Safeway and oth...

Re: Acquisition and Integration of Haggen into Albertsons

...They did develop their upscale format in Marysville, WA and north (about 40 minutes outside of Seattle) where none of the smaller upscales from Seattle were doing business (QFC back then stopped down in Everett about 15 minutes from Marysville). Then they did an upscale format (Haggen) down in P...

Re: Publix expanding to Virginia

I think somewhere they mentioned their Shoppers brand as being the one that was taking them over? Although in this situation (unlike the A&P where all the stores were available) wouldn't they be limited by the ones that needed to be sold to eliminate competition, and the thought that if there were ...
