Re: Coronavirus Fears and Empty Supermarkets

I'm in the DC area. Safeway is the closest grocery store to me. Believe it or not it is still open 24 hours. However all of the other nearby Safeway stores are now closing at Midnight. Since the panic buying the store has slowly recovered. But forget paper products. The entire aisle has been complet...

Re: Coronavirus Fears and Empty Supermarkets

storewanderer is correct -- the media hyped the hysteria, continually showing the runs people made on supermarkets. This lead to supermarkets being cleared out in areas of the country where the virus wasn't presumed to be a problem, and eventually countries where it's presumed not to be a problem. ...

Re: Game Stop: Essential retail?

I guess Game Stop thinks that work from home means being able to buy the latest video game, the console to play it on, a new controller and collectables like Funko Pops to go with said game. At least at Best Buy or Microcenter I could buy a new laptop/desktop, cable modem, router, printer and access...

Possible DC Area Safeway Strike

Looks like Safeway employees in the DC area are heading towards a possible strike. The union and Albertsons say they have made progress over a number of issues but the main sticking point is the pension. https://wtop.com/local/2020/03/dc-area-safeway-workers-careening-toward-strike-vote-thursday/ Th...

Re: Coronavirus Fears and Empty Supermarkets

Here's what the cold and flu remedies aisle looked like at the Walmart closest to me on March 3rd. I'm in Northern Virginia outside DC. We go crazy over toilet paper, bread and milk when snow is predicted. But this is beyond anything I've seen and I've lived in DC my whole life. A friend told me tha...

Re: PA Stores and strange perimeter layouts

What is it with PA Stores and strange perimeter layouts? This set up where fried hot deli food is completely separate from lunchmeats is something I saw in both Giant-PA and Weis. This is very unusual to me and not something I have seen out west. In Weis I saw something even more odd: the seafood d...

Re: Kroger opening distribution center in Maryland

"Kroger said Thursday that the 350,000-square-foot customer fulfillment center (CFC) will be constructed at 7106 Geoffrey Way in Frederick and fill online grocery orders for shoppers in Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia." "Ocado CFCs use digital and robotic technology to service e...

Re: CVS and cutting store hours

I was in another store tonight close to 10 PM and again heard pills being counted and bottled filled behind the closed but fully lit up pharmacy. When this store starts closing at 8 PM next week I really wonder how this will work. Would it be too crazy to think that perhaps CVS is running an overni...

Re: UNFI Makes Deals for 13 Shoppers Stores; 4 More to Close

The locations, esp. in the DC area are a very poor fit for Publix. Other than the store near White Flint, they really have no locations in areas that would work for Publix and even that location is away from the areas where Publix's demographic lives.. Pharmacies are no longer the profit centers th...
