Re: UNFI Makes Deals for 13 Shoppers Stores; 4 More to Close

The Shoppers location on US 1 in Arlington seems to be that kind of high traffic/high profile spot that an operator looking to make a debut would jump at. With Amazon HQ2 being developed right there, the number of customers with disposable income will only increase. Having spent a few years working...

Re: UNFI Makes Deals for 13 Shoppers Stores; 4 More to Close

After the transactions are finalized, twenty-six Shoppers stores will remain open and for sale. I doubt Shoppers will exist past 2020. I'm still trying to figure out who would want the remaining stores. ShopRite? Publix? Piece meal between existing grocers already in DC and Baltimore? Maybe Walmart...

Re: UNFI Makes Deals for 13 Shoppers Stores; 4 More to Close

I'm just surprised not a single store went to Safeway. Are the stores overlapping, or did UNFI not want to deal? I'm surprised that all of the stores are going to what I would assume are non-union operators. Based on the quotes in the article the union does not seem happy about these transactions. ...

Re: Two Harris Teeters in Charlotte closing (one temporary, one permanent)

2201 W T Harris Boulevard is odd looking for a retail store. From the outside you would think it's just a Harris Teeter corporate office, and not an actual supermarket. Most stores will have some big facade that's easily identifiable, and draws people in. It is very weird looking. Almost looks like...

Re: Kroger "big announcement coming" on branding

An article from Business Insider quotes an internal leaked memo that states Kroger is #17 in the Fortune 500 but isn't in the top 100 for brand value. What they seem to be missing is outside of the territory where Kroger operates Kroger-brand stores no one cares about Kroger as a brand. Shoppers ca...

Re: Walmart observations

Last week I was in Las Vegas for a few days, and when we visited a Walmart there (the one on Charleston Boulevard) I observed that almost the entire HBA section of the store (as well as most of the tool section) was being kept in locked cabinets. When I made a purchase, I had to find an employee to...

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area

I have only now found out about these, but the Food Lions in Chantilly (South Riding) and Laskin Rd in Virginia Beach are closing along with Haymarket. The South Riding store I was not expecting as much to close, considering it was less maligned than the Haymarket location and still had a purpose. ...

Re: State of Food Lion in the Washington D.C. area

What I'd say comprises the 20% are their fringe stores, like those in this region and outlying states such as Georgia and Tennessee. Out of everything, I am the most certain these stores will stay and join the remodel program. If you look at what Ahold has done with Giant one will note that any sto...

Re: Fry’s Electronics on Life Support

Microcenter seems to be very selective as to where they open locations. I didn't realize it but they only have 25 stores nationwide. I'm lucky that I have a Microcenter store near me. They are competitively priced and have the products that I am looking for. They avoid me having to mail order comput...

Re: Target Dance Music

Target's recent remodels (ie the Sterling , VA store off Route 7) look like an ode to what they think millennial shoppers want in a store. No problem with them catering to a certain demographic. However as a store they have to consider that folks might come in and go what the heck happened in here I...
