Re: Farm Fresh may be on its way out

Supervalu may be looking to streamline things like those Food Lions they bought which would be smaller size... Shoppers seemed to have an odd mix of stores. Some were quasi-warehouse style stores (sort of) and others just felt like outdated conventionals. Shop Rite has a merchandising flexibility t...

Re: Farm Fresh may be on its way out

In my view Shoppers is the weakest of the DC area chain grocers. There have long been rumors that Publix is eyeing the DC area. If Publix went after Shoppers stores whether open or closed how would the issue of the union be handled? Seems to me that is something that Publix wouldn't want to deal wit...

Re: Kroger May Sell Off Its Convenience Store Chains, Including Kwik Shop, Tom Thumb, Turkey Hill

I've always been curious why Kroger picked up Turkey Hill and the Turkey Hill Minit Markets. Kroger's only presence in Turkey Hill's core area would have been Western PA in the Pittsburgh area. But Kroger sold the Pittsburgh stores in 1984 one year prior to purchasing Turkey Hill. Outside PA the clo...

Re: Ahold Delhaize creates Ahold Delhaize USA

Are we talking about the store at News Road and Monticello that was closed but Publix decided to reopen anyway? I think that was the "new" one but it's east of Richmond. I was referring to the Martins store at 200 Charter Colony Parkway in Midlothian. It opened in 2014 as a replacement for the Mart...

Re: "Entire Aisles are Empty" @ Whole Foods

The thing that I wonder is how you integrate a high end retailer who wasn't afraid to spend money to get money into a company that is all about speed, efficiency and reduction of cost to bring the theoretical best price to the consumer. I do agree that it might be a bit early to pull the fire alarm ...

Re: More Layoffs at Walmart

Walmart swiftly fixes problems. They always have. They don't let mistakes linger, and they learn from them. Sam's as a whole is profitable. Cutting HQ jobs is normal, as they automate more of the company and remove the fat. Keep in mind; the lower overhead at the top, the lower prices can be at the...

Re: Ahold Delhaize creates Ahold Delhaize USA

Wasn't Martin's a fairly perimeter-heavy format? I can only imagine what Food Lion did to the perimeters... It is my feeling that Martins was perimeter heavy because Ukrops was perimeter heavy. At the time of the buyout Ukrops was beloved by folks who had been around Richmond for a long time. It wa...

Re: Kroger partners with Chase for contactless (mobile) payments

Chase might be the wrong partner for Kroger but I think the concept of having a captive payment system is about getting more data on consumer behavior. I'm going to assume that the customer downloads an app and somehow that app has your payment info and possible loyalty card entered into it. You pay...

Re: Ahold Delhaize creates Ahold Delhaize USA

Evidently, Food Lion is doing something right, because they're still around. They aren't shrinking at the same rate as, say Southeastern Grocers. Yeah, I don't think Food Lion is doing that bad. Their prices are reasonable, and definitely lower than most competitors in the areas in which they opera...

Re: Albertsons NorCal change

Have there been any visible changes in operations? I'm in the Washington DC area. I've noticed over the past few months that Safeway has had a huge increase in the amount of random displays junking up the aisles and the big pallets of random stuff along the back aisle where there is typically more ...
