Re: Fred Meyer "Spokane Test" - eliminate dedicated electronics, reduce GM, expand liquor/food, require card for sale pr

Well the reality at Fred Meyer is that many of the sale items require you to add the digital coupon to your account to get the sale price. So in essence, they have been requiring a card/phone app for some time to get many of the sale prices. They have required the app for digital coupons, but nothi...

Re: JC Penney Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Very well said. JCPenney and Macy's have some stores that are simply too large to be devoted to mostly clothing. ...and yet I still can't find anything that I like AND in my size, even in 70k-100k square foot stores. So apparently JCPenney denies the Sycamore rumor , but the bidders are still secre...

Re: JC Penney Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

For the most part, I think there is a void in American retail that COVID has brutally exposed. The sparsity of real talent in top management with their consistently poor decisions. Consolidation has only worsened the situation along with a whole bunch of systemic issues that have a long history of ...

Re: McDonald's Closing 100 Walmart Restaurants

Walmart should add some sort of coffee shop option. Would be a great opportunity for Starbucks to add Seattle's Best Coffee at Walmart stores. Coffee shops can be cheap to operate with nice margins if the sales mix is just right. That's why so many grocery stores have Starbucks kiosks.

Re: Fred Meyer "Spokane Test" - eliminate dedicated electronics, reduce GM, expand liquor/food, require card for sale pr

I was in my local Fred Meyer a couple days ago. While they aren't advertising or requiring a card yet, there are a lot of new shelf tags that say "with card" mixed in. These items, for now anyway, are ringing up at that price without a card. The current rewards card, which is optional, does not req...

Re: Rite Aid Expose by Reuters - Using Facial Recognition?

Not sure if this passed or not but Portland tried to ban retail use of facial recognition technology:

Re: New Amazon Grocery Chain

This continues to be a glacially slow roll out. It is almost as slow as Kroger's progress on building new stores in CA, OR, and WA. Okay, it isn't THAT slow, but it is close. Albertsons/Safeway is out-building them.... I'm being snarky here but there is the issue of the dozens of still vacant Alber...

Re: Microsoft to close retail stores

Most of the business I saw at Microsoft stores was not around the PCs but initially selling Windows Phones and later X-Box 360s. Also they pushed the Surface line of computers. The huge focus on video games was never going to be enough to keep them around. I've expected the closure since Balmer left.

Re: Signs of trouble at Target?

Seems like retail is struggling in general in downtown Portland and maybe someone else was willing to pay more for those other two floors and they ran the numbers and decided to downsize. What I wonder is what will happen to those other two floors (offices or condos)... Stores that are not on the g...
