Re: Ralphs Up while Albertsons Down (market share)

Sadly, I have seen some really awful Lifestyle "remodels." Safeway tried to cut costs and some small stores got Lifestyle "Lite" remodels. They cut corners and did not fully remodel. For example, old refrigerator units were not replaced(even though dented and rusted), most of the...

Re: Safeway Credit Card Readers

"Pin and Chip" will probably not come to the US anytime soon. Banks shudder at the cost of equipping all credit cards with expensive smart chips. Merchants would also freak at the cost of replacing all of their pin pads once again. Arby's restaurants are owned by many different owners. Eac...

Re: Safeway Credit Card Readers

Walgreens used to have the RFID readers, but got rid of them a while ago. They now use a huge bulky plastic credit card reader that has a cover over the pin pad that obscures people from peeking. Arby's, McDonald's, Jack In The Box, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, Petco, Sports Authority, Sbarro, Circle ...

Re: Safeway Credit Card Readers

The RFID readers that I have found that work are at 7-Eleven and Rite Aid. Rite Aid got brand new credit card readers months ago with the RFID feature. Best Buy is one nationwide chain that uses RFID readers. Regal Cinemas and Cinemark used to have RFID readers but Regal recently got rid of them. Ci...

Re: Ralphs Up while Albertsons Down (market share)

It is no surprise that Albertsons is not doing so well. Albertsons was always a high priced store. Even with Albertsons' recent price reductions, people still come to associate the Albertsons name with high prices. Their selection was mediocre to adequate at best. Also, Supervalu Albertsons has been...

Re: Georgia's last Super Kmart transitions to Big Kmart

The temporary signs on the ground say Kmart instead of Big K. I believe the person writing the story might have gotten the wrong information. They meant that the format will be more like a Big K, but of course they don't use Big K signs anymore. The store signs are custom made for each store by loca...

Re: Safeway Credit Card Readers

What happened to Terrible Herbst? I would hate to see the decor in their gas stations get eliminated.

The RFID readers are kind of fun to use if they are working properly. However, swiping a card hardly requires any extra effort than tapping a card to an RFID reader.

Re: Wal-Mart in Saline, MI Opening 10/14/09

Concrete floors with recycled content is nothing new. In fact, several years ago Albertsons remodeled many of their supermarkets with rubber floors. The floors look almost like regular vinyl, but it is indeed rubber. It saved money because you would not need to spend money on chemical cleaners to cl...

Re: Safeway Credit Card Readers

I didn't see the RFID reader on top. CVS has the RFID reader, but none of them worked when I tried to use them with my RFID Mastercard PayPass card. Also, I noticed a brand new Safeway branded atm from Cardtronics. It is the same model as the Cardtronics Chase Bank branded atms just delivered to CVS...

Re: Delhaize(parent of Food Lion) in merger talks with BiLo

People are saying that the merger might be blocked by the FTC. http://supermarketnews.com/retail_financial/bilo_merger_1009/ It would make Food Lion number one in market share in 14 of 17 markets where they both do business. In many of the markets it would boost market share above that of Walmart Su...
