Re: Baker City, OR to get a second Safeway
Whoops, it looks like it will re-open as an Albertsons after all. http://www.bakercityherald.com/news/4535504-151/baker-to-get-albertsons This really just confirms what I've long suspected about the new Albertson's. They don't have a long time strategy and are just making random decisions. Example:...

Re: SoCal strike looming
In previous years a strike deadline meant a strike deadline. And the agreements were usually ironed out right about midnight the day before the deadline (or the union would agree to extend the deadline because progress was being made). It would be a very stupid strategy for the union to set a strike...

Re: SoCal strike looming
The boycott is a stupid idea but they have set a deadline of August 8th. I think there will be a last minute settlement, as always. I wonder if the Food Employers Council still exists? This used to be composed of Alpha Beta, Safeway, Lucky, Albertson's, Vons and Ralphs. They had always negotiated th...

Re: Ralphs El Segundo to become Fresh Fare
This article says it has been an Alpha Beta, Boys, Ralphs and Cookes Market. Looks like an Alpha Beta build to me. http://www.dailybreeze.com/article/ZZ/20130419/NEWS/130419246 OK.. That makes sense. I did a little more searching. The Mayfair was actually at 220 East Grand Ave. El Segundo,CA, which...

Re: Ralphs El Segundo to become Fresh Fare
El Segundo also contains one of the few non-ghetto 99 Cents Only stores. It's a pleasure to shop in that store (which also has concrete floors and is attached to a 3-story parking garage). The Rite Aid in El Segundo was also recently remodeled. I'm pretty sure the actual 99 Cents Only building was ...

Re: Pavillions Arcadia
Most new stores and remodels are built with systems that record each camera directly to disk from the corporate office or IT office. Digital storage is so cheap now and has replaced video tape. They are also integrated into the POS systems so that loss prevention employees can pull up a split screen...

Re: Pavillions Arcadia
'Three's a Crowd' type efforts don't work unless management puts some sort of incentive or guarantee behind the promise. When Steve Burd (Someone I was not a big fan of) first took over Safeway he instituted a similar program in the Washington D.C. division. According to a manager that worked in the...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
Sometimes, the vibe in two different markets in the same division can be different. In San Diego, Ralphs stores are generally very, vey nicely maintained and clean. Obviously well taken care of for years and years. In LA, not so much. Several look like they have been redecorated but not truly remod...

Re: Kroger to buy Roundy's for $800 million
If Kroger decided to change King Soopers, Fry's, QVC, and Ralphs over to the Kroger name, then that's not going to be a huge upset since those brands have more or less operating as Kroger stores anyway for a number of years now. I would strongly disagree with you about this. All four of those brand...

Re: Ashland Marina Safeway reopening...
Pavilions had produce in the middle. I do not know if all of them were like that. You're right, all the original Pavilions stores built by Vons before Safeway took over had produce in the center behind the checkstands (with the exception of the first store in Garden Grove). The 'Pavilion', which co...
