Re: Petsmart in trouble
Part of PetSmart's appeal is one of the biggest problems it has--the ability to bring your dog (or I guess cats are fine too) into the store. This unfortunately causes the store to smell awful all the time, and make it inconvenient if you were browsing for toys or food. The store should not smell a...

Re: Albertsons in El Paso
Skaggs Alpha Beta definitely operated in El Paso as of 1988, this commercial was from that era , and other references do list Skaggs Alpha Beta being in El Paso. Not surprised there's no reference to Jewel-Osco being in El Paso, like the other J/O stores in Texas, they basically existed for about a...

Re: Hy-Vee: The "Haggen" of the Midwest?
Hy Vee is a great operator and doesn't get as much credit as it deserves due to operating in regions that most do not pay much attention to. I think they are one of the best operators in the US. I like they much better than Publix, for example. They have been building the large stores for at least t...

Re: Bon Ton Stores headed on the downswing
Dillards has been absolute failure in the Midwest--Cleveland and Cincinnati have seen a lot of store closings and the remaining stores were neglected for many years. Dillard also has its own problems, generally---a declining sales trend for many years. They operate as a piggy bank for the Dillard f...

Re: Kroger May Sell Off Its Convenience Store Chains, Including Kwik Shop, Tom Thumb, Turkey Hill
Yeah, EG Group is not in the best position with its stores. If they want to be a success, they should form a new brand name (or adopt one of the names, Turkey Hill probably is the best if they want to go that route). A lot of the most successful gas brands (Wawa, Sheetz, QuikTrip, etc.) have all be...

Re: Circle K acquiring "Corner Store"
I always thought most of the Corner Store network was in pretty good shape... not necessarily large and modern, but at least clean and well maintained. But there are always exceptions. Such as the one in Deming, NM. The Valero branded sites that are not Corner Stores on the other hand, seem to be un...

Re: Over 500 US Subway locations to close
I am not sure this is anything new. Subways have opened and closed a lot over the years...
I wonder if the difference is they are actually doing de-franchising now vs. previous closures were failed franchises.

Re: Kroger May Sell Off Its Convenience Store Chains, Including Kwik Shop, Tom Thumb, Turkey Hill
The only real “star” of the Kroger c-stores is Turkey Hill, which will probably be expanded under the EG ownership. I think Loaf N Jug is also pretty good. Quik Stop is terrible due to the condition of its sites and the inconsistencies that come from the franchise model they have (though, it does f...

Re: Circle K acquiring "Corner Store"
I suppose the Fast Market sites are what was sold to Empire Petroleum by C-T Yes, it appears they are. They show up on my credit card statement as "Store xxxx" - no business name, just a store number. Actually, the old Corner Store store number. I immediately identified the two I visited ...

Re: Kroger May Sell Off Its Convenience Store Chains, Including Kwik Shop, Tom Thumb, Turkey Hill
In Mesa/Gilbert/Tempe area I drove by two freestanding Fry's Convenience Stores. Obviously, these were not sold to EG Group. One appeared to be a former Arco AM/PM in the parking lot of a Fry's Store. This was a quite nice large convenience store. The other was a combined McDonalds/Fry's Fuel so it ...
