Re: What now, SuperValu?
Stafford is certainly closer to Safeway's trade area than Publix's, and frankly, I wouldn't be too sure of Publix in the DC suburbs until the Richmond market is a success and they start opening stores north. Publix is rumored to be coming a retail development near the Southpointe/Cosner's Corner ar...

Re: What now, SuperValu?
Shoppers is a quasi-warehouse format around DC (more of a conventional up in Baltimore though) but their locations skew in middle to lower middle class areas. These are not really the types of locations I would expect Safeway to target. Maybe someone like a Shop Rite or one of the other independent...

Re: What now, SuperValu?
Save-A-Lot faces competition from rival limited assortment/discount grocers Aldi and Lidl. Could Publix acquire both Farm Fresh (42 stores) and Shoppers (52 stores)? Acquiring both chains gets Publix into the Hampton Roads, Virginia, region and Maryland. SuperValu would remove itself from the Atlan...

Re: Publix expanding to Virginia
If I recall correctly, one of those "other" Martin's stores includes one built a few years ago, so I have to assume the stores are making money and won't be closed down, changed to the Food Lion, or just letting their leases run out. Maybe the stores weren't divested firstly because they ...

Re: Publix expanding to Virginia
I'm very curious to see what will happen to the Richmond Martins stores that were not sold to Publix. In the articles I saw about the divestitures Ahold said that they would continue to operate the stores pending a sale to other operators. Thus far I haven't seen any word of who these stores would ...

Re: Target to close 11 stores before year end
Agreed. Target also seems to no longer be focused on their core large stores. Their planned store development list (below) shows that every planned new store is between 17,000 square feet and 50,000 square feet (except for one store in Spring, Texas). They're essentially opening up trendy, slightly...

Re: Albertsons and Safeway Openings/Closings 2017
Given that there has already been at least one former Haggen Albertsons reopened as a Safeway in Washington (Burien), I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the names flipped. The thing I'm worried about is that there's still a discrepancy in the merchandise mix of the two stores, and the conversio...

Another Casualty: The Limited Closing all stores
The Limited is closing all stores. However it looks like their web site may stay online and selling based on this and other articles.

Re: Kmart's Time Is Running Out
I'm curious if any of you live near a Kmart that has no immediate competition from Wal-Mart or Target. I used to shop at the Herndon, VA Kmart for a single HBA item for my Dad that they sold in a bulk size that neither Wal-Mart or Target sold in a bulk size. The Herndon, VA Kmart is 15-20 minutes fr...

This is an interesting adjunct to the store closing story:
