Safeway Discontinues Airline Miles
Effective 01 March 2010, Safeway is discontinuing it's long-running airline miles program. In a letter mailed to cardholders, Safeway expressed their intention to focus on lower prices, and this would be one way to do it. Attached is a copy of the letter I received today. Interestingly, these letter...

Re: A mini-mart swiping the City Market name in Seattle?
I remember driving past there when I lived in the area. Always meant to look it up but never got around to it.

Re: Grocery chains in your area
Food 4 Less, with a couple stores in the Portland area, and I believe not affiliated with Kroger. It looks like they're franchisees of the F4L name: From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_4_Less,_Foods_Co. : There are other stores scattered throughout the United States with the Food 4 Less name, pa...

Re: Grocery chains in your area
I've moved this to the Non-region Specific area. I'm familiar with two regions: Detroit and San Diego. In Detroit: The major player here is Kroger. After the closure of Farmer Jack stores, Kroger is now the only national conventional supermarket chain in the Detroit area, and most of Michigan. Meije...

Complete: Coronado Vons sheds 80's interior
It's over. The Vons in Coronado, CA; a former gable Safeway, shed the interior package it's had since the Vons takeover in 1988. Now sporting a tastefully done Lifestyle decor, the store can now compete with the "PF&H" remodeled Albertsons sharing the island. Department wise, the Vons ...

Re: Wal-Mart in Saline, MI Opening 10/14/09
Is it just me, or is Walmart no longer using the word "Supercenter" on new Supercenters and existing structures that have been changed to the new signage? I've noticed this on at least a couple of Supercenters. That's correct... Supercenter or not, the stores are just being called Walmart...

NEW: Board Theme
I've updated the board theme, with an actual custom banner. Thoughts? Reactions? Better ideas for a banner? (suggestions and entries welcome!) UPDATE: Plan B. The new theme lacked contrast, so I've gone with my second choice for a new theme. This one includes better contrast along with a fresh look....

Re: Fresh & Easy to open in Central CA before year's end
True, F&E is a very expensive test... but as krogerclerk mentioned, Tesco has deep pockets for a long term investment like this (they posted a £3b profit last year!) so it'll be interesting to see how the format evolves. Personally, I like F&E. Most Americans are used to a 'stock the freezer...
