Re: Baker City, OR to get a second Safeway
here are actually multiple former Winn-Dixie's which were sold to Kroger in DFW which retain the split design you mentioned That's because WD didn't bring them back together until after the Texas exodus. It was known as the Food Pavilion. Kroger (and others) got the original versions of these store...

Re: Baker City, OR to get a second Safeway
Kroger also had put the deli and bakery together in a corner of the store in the early 1980s as part of the Greenhouse program, though those stores were generally smaller than Albertsons' average. Kroger pairing up the Deli and Bakery goes further back than that, as most Superstores and Family Cent...

Re: Baker City, OR to get a second Safeway
Like I said, the Albertsons programs at Safeway are less wishy-washy decisions and more execution problems. Unfortunately, the company isn't in a place where it can have more execution problems, lest it be executed itself. Albertsons has the unfortunate position now that they control 2500 stores wh...

Any software package will only be as good as the folks who use it. This is simply an analytics package. It doesn't perform distribution; it tells buyers how much to get and what people want in certain locations. If current operations are any indicator, the folks who use it will not make very good us...

Re: Kmart's Time Is Running Out
In the travels I have done (mostly in the south), the general ratio of open to closed store builds is that mostly older stores are open. A large number of newer ones have closed. An even larger number of newer stores have been completely demolished. Two examples of this I know of; Sulphur, LA was a ...

Re: Kmart's Time Is Running Out
And at least one other one (Or at least I'd say similar) was Leedmark, which opened a single store in Glen Burnie, MD and lasted about 2 1/2 years. That store is now a Walmart (super sized now after having originally been split between Walmart and the Mars supermarket chain - I guess in 1993 Walmar...

Shopko still seems to be hanging on, but last time I visited a Shopko I got the feeling that they were struggling. I forget about Shopko. They operate on three levels; the full Shopko, Shopko Express and Shopko Hometown. I haven't been in any of their stores. IIRC, most of the Hometown stores were ...

Re: Kmart's Time Is Running Out
I do wonder why there aren't at least strong regionals that offer a superior (or at least on par) grocery department with a superior GM departments. Three words: Volume Buying Power. In the 70's and 80's, Kmart had it. If Kmart wanted something made a certain way, that's the way they got it. Someti...

Re: Sobeys Buys Canada Safeway
As for RCS, they actually did open a few stores as Real Superstore in the 1980s in Louisiana with a similar product mix (food-leaning, though a few items like clothes). They ultimately sold out to Schwegmann (which went out of business within 7 years, I believe) and that led to a few interesting th...

Re: Kmart's Time Is Running Out
That Beaverton Kmart I mentioned recently screams that the store is knocking on death's door, especially with the signs having been removed. A friend of mine told me that he visited the NE Portland Kmart last week and they also had rows of lights shut off and a very empty looking electronics sectio...
