Re: Another Shaw's to close

Add Scarborough, ME to the list of closures. Maine is the state where the chain was founded in 1860. I'm hearing all divisions are in the red so this could be the start of a major round of bloodletting.

Another Shaw's to close

This time it's the Westbrook, Maine location which has been starved of capex and staffing for years. Tellingly, it's the only location in the district that didn't get DriveUp & Go. The new Market Basket across the street finished it off. https://www.pressherald.com/2022/01/21/shaws-to-close-its-...

Re: Price Chopper, Tops to merge

I wonder if Shaw's made a bid for the Rutland store? Rutland is an obvious gap in Shaw's coverage of Vermont. I wonder if they were looking to have a single entity take over all the divested stores instead of a piecemeal approach in order to wrap up the merger as soon as possible. I wouldn't rule o...

Re: Price Chopper, Tops to merge

This merger sounds very similar to the one between the parent companies of Stop & Shop and Hannaford a couple years back. One of the divestments of the Ahold/Delhaize merger was a Stop & Shop in Gardner, MA. Tops ended up taking it over. They only lasted a year. It was so far out of Tops' o...

Re: Price Chopper, Tops to merge

Tops would've been another acquisition opportunity for Albertsons... Maybe Albertsons can buy the combined company once the merger is complete. I think both chains compete in Syracuse. There is quite a bit of overlap in Syracuse. As for an Albertsons acquisition, there's a huge amount of overlap in...

Re: Price Chopper, Tops to merge

Geez Billy-I thought you were going to scoop me on this one and turns out we both got scooped. Now, here's a conflict right out of the gate-Tops is union and Price Chopper is not and never has been. The UFCW tried a few times but has pretty much given up. I wonder what'll happen if say a Tops is co...
