Re: Haircut Places, Beauty Salons, Massage Parlors Disappearing

The Smart Style haircut in Wal Mart that I pay some attention to and have used a couple times recently posted signs that it is now a franchise shop and no longer corporate owned. Some others in the area Wal Marts have closed outright. I haven't noticed if it still has the same 2 employees as it had...

Re: Toys R Us Will Open Up Stores in Every Single Macy's

At the Washington Square store in Oregon, Macy's opened.up the Toys RUs department where the juniors department was by the main mall entrance. That is a pretty big chunk of floorspace and just down from LEGO, which seems quite successful, though. I agree, seems like department store toy departments...

Re: Starbucks Closing Some Stores Nationwide Due To Safety

4th and Morrison downtown and one in the Gateway District. Downtown Portland used to have one on nearly every corner. At least 2/3s have closed. 4th/Morrison was unfortunately very prone to being a vandalism target for the 'anarchists' that still utilize any excuse of unrest in the country to vanda...

Re: Laurel, MT IGA transferred to Albertsons

I don't want to trend too far off topic, but I thought it might be interesting to see where these stores stand today: 1) Great Falls, still a Smith's (was Buttrey) 2)Bozeman, Gallatin Valley Mall - no grocer present 3) Helena, now a health club 4) Missoula (vacant, looks like it spent time as CVS P...

Re: Los Angeles Times: Where you shop shows what you'll spend

I'm curious as to how they selected the stores to survey. Is there recent data on LA area market share? Because I have a hard time believing that Walmart wouldn't be in the top 10. Possibly Aldi or Target as well. (I assume Costco was omitted since it's difficult to do price comparisons on these ty...

Re: Subway Eliminates Customization and Switches To 12 Sandwiches

When I order sandwiches at Safeway and order one of the pre-advertised sandwiches I notice the employee always has to get a prep card out to figure out how to make the sandwich. It has been like this now for 20+ years ever since they started a sandwich program with pre-advertised sandwiches. I gues...

Re: Laurel, MT IGA transferred to Albertsons

Walmart had opened in Laurel in 2007, making it a challenge for the smaller store to stay competitive. Made it 15 years after Walmart opened in the community; pretty good track record. As with any store, it is nice that another grocer will open there (eventually) because there are always some in co...

Los Angeles Times: Where you shop shows what you'll spend

Los Angeles Times did a grocery survey, using the "top 10" grocers in SoCal. Trader Joe's the least expensive, Sprouts the highest. Terrible result for Albertsons Co's. - Albertsons and VONS higher than Whole Foods, a lot higher than Stater Bros. Ralphs about tied with them. Which L.A. gro...

Re: Oil Change Places and Car Repair

There's a place called Stew's Self-Service Garage in Kirkland that caters to do-it-yourselfers by providing lift rentals pretty much any tool you might need to do a repair job yourself and mechanics who can provide advice (but who will not do the job for you.) I've started doing some of the work on...
