Re: 🛒 Kroger-Albertsons Merger: National Impact
Just my opinion, but judging from history, my opinion of this merger has changed 180 degrees. I think the merger should be allowed to go through with the amount of divestitures Kroger/Albertsons currently want. C&S may not fail as bad as the Haagan debacle, but it will fail. The simple answer i...

Re: Crucial times for Shoppers
Looking at Shoppers (short of them announcing that they'd sell off large chunks of the remaining chain) would not be a good way to judge UNFI's plans. It would be Cub Foods. If they suddenly announced that they'd do away with the Cub Foods franchise program that'd be a sign that they're going to ma...

Re: Crucial times for Shoppers
I don't know this area at all. Is this an area Safeway would want these stores in? Looks like they're not in that area, and they bought two Shoppers stores a couple years ago. But those were both in the Baltimore/DC area and that's quite a distance away, and I don't know that Safeway would want mor...

Re: Meanwhile in Canada, they're building Malls
The weather is probably also a factor. There is higher demand for indoor malls in places where it is too cold to walk around outdoors for a portion of the year. That was always supposed to be the saving grace of malls, but it doesn't work that way----look at all the dead enclosed malls we have rega...

Re: Crucial times for Shoppers
Looks like three out of the four Shoppers opened within the past year are already closing ; all within St. Mary's County. I wonder what is happening here. Is the local McKay's chain Shoppers superseded returning? Too much investment and too little profit in return? That is interesting because it mi...

I also think the dirty secret as to why it works so well in those environments is because of the pricing model. If someone grabs a Coors Light and the system accidentally rings up a regular Coors, who cares? The pricing is the same for a beer, a candy bar, etc. This seems to be the perfect solution...

Re: 🛒 Kroger-Albertsons Merger: National Impact
I do wonder would it have worked out differently if Haggen had warehouses, or would it have been the same end result? One of the things I remember reading about Haggen is that they were much more expensive than the Albertsons/Safeway stores they replaced, and the perishable departments were not the...
