Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?

Great chronological timeline, but I have some more to add. I forget the source but Safeway dates back to as early as 1941 in Purcellville. There was also Food Lion's stint as Bloom, which ended in 2012 and was at the western frontier of the Bloom/Bottom Dollar conversions of the D.C. metro. For com...

Re: Remembering Magruder's

Thank you. I never knew Magruders had such a large presence in MD, I still think of them as more VA (although of course they had the one DC store, the only one still left which was considered the flagship store - I always thought of the Vienna store as the flagship store for some reason). I understa...

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?

[snip]Maybe Publix won't try DC. I think Publix has some decisions to make as to if they want to move North or continuing to move West. Frankly, given their format, and the competitive factors on the East Coast itself, I think Publix would be better off moving West. I have to agree, Giant and Safew...

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?

This article from the Post archives confirms it was Food Lion that did in the Purcellville Safeway. Food Lion opened in 1990 according to the article. Apparently Safeway had been in Purcellville almost 50 years at the time of the closing. They had been in their last location since 1968. Looks like ...

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?

[snip]Personally, I think there is a question of whether we need another grocery store in the immediate Northern Virginia area. I'm not saying Publix shouldn't try, I'm all for additional competition. I must agree. The market is already saturated with Giant and Safeway dominating the other chains. ...

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?

TBH I have no idea if any actual building plans have ever been drawn up, the only real proof is a sign announcing the acreage for the shopping center on that corner that's been up for almost 30 years now. I agree Harris-Teeter and Wegman's are just too big, Lidl gets my vote. There used to be a Saf...

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?

Given all of the development in Purcellville and Round Hill if another new shopping center was going to be built I'd think it would have already been constructed. Just like with the center where Harris Teeter is located now. This is my feeling as well, the land's been offered for over 30 years with...

Re: Winchester/Front Royal: Martin's Monopoly?

I honestly think Aldi would have been able to fit in both towns, but I digress if they want to take expansion slowly and fit populations accordingly. Going back to my main point, Aldi is more of a chain cities like Front Royal, Stephens City etc. can share alongside Winchester than Wegmans or Whole...

Re: Remembering Magruder's

Being that Magruder's finally disappeared about eight years ago would continuing this thread here be ok?

I do want to discuss Weis but that discussion will be better off on the other site.
