Re: Gelsons Sold to Japanese company PPIH
What is this horrible reputation exactly? I know the stores are not the greatest physical condition but my observation has been of well run well staffed and busy stores with very efficient employees. There is a real difference in the behavior and sense of urgency with the employees at Stater vs. th...

Re: Gelsons Sold to Japanese company PPIH
Stater Bros. has a horrible reputation in both LA/OC, which is probably why it’s been stagnant over the past 20 years (it has slightly smaller store count than it did when it picked off numerous stores from Lucky/Albertsons). Many of its locations are in areas where Kroger and Albertsons/Safeway hav...

Re: Midwest Territory Expansion
I think whatever money Kroger was going to use on organic expansion into a new market is all being shifted to this digital/Ocado thing. And they are expanding that into new markets I guess... at least that one center in FL. I don't count DC since Harris Teeter is there. We will see how that works o...

Re: Midwest Territory Expansion
I'd be really, really surprised if Kroger expanded organically, especially with the growth of digital grocery shopping accelerating. Cub Foods, Giant Eagle, etc. could likely be had for less than book value, and even an acquisition on the level of Schuck's would be cheaper than building out a new fl...

Re: Albertsons scales back Plated Meal Kits
Have you tried any of those heat and serve meals yet? I wonder if they are any good. Seems like Albertsons late 90's Quick Fixin Ideas program all over again. I've purchased the chicken breast and lasagna entrees. Both were pretty good, but not much better than a quality frozen entrée. Recently, Wa...

Shockingly, Irvine just matched Long Beach. Will be interesting to see if Kroger threatens to close one or more of its locations...

Re: Albertsons scales back Plated Meal Kits
Kroger has been slapping the Home Chef name on just about everything, from virtually all the hot foods in the deli, the chilled deli soups, side dishes, etc. Recently they added a handful of single-serving heat & serve dinners: lasagna, chicken breast with veggies, etc. Most appeared to be price...

Re: Amazon Fresh coming to Sacramento (Citrus Heights)
Their Los Angeles store at 6855 S La Cienega is a new-build. It's not on the list in the article linked above, but I believe the location opened last week. According photos on the Yelp page for the location, it's branded "Amazon Fresh Ladera Heights," which is not technically true but clo...

Re: Albertsons closing Irvine, CA
Anchors in spaces of this size like Walmart will not enter a lease without a minimum of 20 years term guaranteed, usually 20 plus two 5 year renewals. There however is an increase at the 10 year mark. I'm very familiar with the Irvine Company and how they handle these. Irvine Company for some reaso...
