Giant Eagle switches locations to curbside pickup and delivery only

Post by SamSpade »

The chain already converted one location in Cuyahoga Falls and it was such a success that they will be doing so to a second location in Garfield Heights.

Store pharmacies remain open, but have barriers in place to separate pharmacy traffic from the store environment.

Giant Eagle looks to the future, adding 2nd store for curbside-pickup-delivery only

In light of this month's changes at cleveland.com / decimation of the Plain Dealer, I hate to link to the site, but the article is relevant.

Kroger did this to a store in OH too.

This is likely a solution for chains with high store count in a given area, and some low volume stores that they'd probably like to be rid of anyway, to convert over to this format and move the walk in customers to another store a mile away.

The problem is many of the chains that operate in this manner, do not have strong or in some cases any online/pick up at store ordering technology in place. They rely on delivery services "powered by Instacart" or similar. The stronger chains with high volume stores tend to have fewer locations and this would not be efficient as they would lose too many walk in customers.
