This is very interesting. I am confused how casino/hotel closures would impact a grocery store's supply chain. Maybe for DSD/alcohol vendors?

When I went into this store a number of years ago it was being supplied by Associated Utah. Pricing was very high and selection was limited (though it was a small space). It didn't seem to be running Associated Utah's ad programs, cash registers, bags, or anything. Kind of weird in general.

A guy I know from a different (unrelated to retail) board mentioned the closing a few weeks ago. He didn't get it, either.

Searching for "Laughlin grocery stores" revealed a bunch of gas stations and mini-marts plus the supermarkets located in Bullhead City. Only one of the supermarkets, a Hispanic store, wasn't a chain. My guess is Aldape's somehow arranged to have the casinos' suppliers supply it and when the casinos closed it became unprofitable for the suppliers to serve such a small store.

Most people in Laughlin just drive over to Bullhead City for their necessities

I see a Family Dollar is right down the road from this place in Laughlin.

I hesitate to say that is probably what did it in.

Family Dollar/Dollar General really have an impact on rural grocery stores. They literally take away the center store business. While they do not offer fresh products, they offer center store items at a substantial discount and a better variety of non food and customers seem to gravitate to them. When the long standing independent grocer loses that center store business it becomes more difficult for them to continue operations and providing the area with fresh meat and produce.

It probably doesn't help that produce seems to be a slow selling item in a lot of these rural type stores in general, but meat seems to sell.

In this case in Laughlin with the independent grocer only being a 12,000 square foot store (less than half of the typical size you see) I am a little confused that they couldn't make it work. Maybe someone else will take the space and try again.

That store opened in the mid 1990's and had been around for a long time. There has to be more to the story.

Maybe Albertsons or Smith's could build a small store in Laughlin, but as jamcool mentioned, Bullhead City is where the shopping is done. I think both Albertsons and Bashas had stores in Bullhead at one time, but those are long gone.

The population in Laughlin is 7,323 according to Google. Not really enough to support a supermarket.

The part of the city that has residences is far from the casinos. If someone was to build a store near the casinos they could pull some traffic from the snowbirds that live in their RVs during the winter in addition to the full time residents of the city. That's the only way I could see it work.

This was what I noticed in Laughlin, the roads were really screwy. The location of Aldapes was a spot where I don't think tourists would go. Aldapes as I recall had a deli in their store but no bakery. If someone would put a bridge up, those houses in Laughlin would be a 5 minute drive from the Bullhead City Smiths.

Winnemucca, NV has a similar population around 8,000 and has a small AFS Independent (Uptown Market, maybe 8k sq ft. with small bakery/deli), Ridleys (former Raleys, 60k square foot store), Khourys (former Albertsons built as an AFS Independent in the mid 90's, about 45k square feet), and a Wal Mart Supercenter. I do think Winnemucca pulls some customers from Lovelock an hour away though (which has about 2,000 population and the old 9 aisle/4 checkstand Safeway).

Then an hour from Winnemucca is Battle Mountain with about 3,500 people. That town has two AFS Independents and both are always fairly busy: Midway Market (10k square foot store with hot food but no bakery/deli) and Etcheverrys (maybe 15k square foot store with a small bakery/deli). Also one Family Dollar there.
