Whole Foods/San Francisco

Post by Groceteria »

Whole Foods is taking over a space in Noe Valley vacated by the closing of one of Kroger's last remaining Cala/Bell stores, boosting them to four locations in SF proper with one more definitely on the way and another under consideration. That's a pretty major presence for a chain usually regarded as a "niche" retailer. It's also going to make for a pretty tiny Whole Foods location.

This mini-Whole Foods format is interesting. It seems like Whole Foods is trying to compete more with Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's stores are small and have less rent. They are more profitable per square foot. Regular Whole Foods stores are often large and the rent in San Francisco is extremely expensive.

Whole Foods could change their business model. They could open up small stores that are copies of Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's stores are known for their cheap prices and organic/healthy selections. Whole Foods is known for outrageously expensive organic/healthy foods. Trader Joe's is wildy successful with their small stores, cheaper rent, and attractive low prices.

Why not try to copy Trader Joe's? It is worth a shot.
