The old employees are still around, but not very many, working the 7-3 shifts and just waiting for retirement. Many can retire in their 50's if they started in their early 20's or teens and they do.
Employees hired before the strike vested at 10 years of service. So, once you were vested you could quit at any time and still qualify for retirement benefits when you reach retirement age (although at 10 years it would be lower). At 20 or 25 years you were vested for full retirement benefits.

Still a pretty good deal though. Times have sure changed.

This issue isn't isolated to the grocery industry either.

Stater Bros. employees ratified a contract similar to Ralphs/Vons/Pavilions/Albertsons this week.

https://www.pe.com/2019/10/04/stater-br ... -contract/

Stater Bros. has never been part of the Food Employers Council and has always signed 'Me too' agreements in which they basically agree to accept whatever the big chains negotiated. Gelson's and Super A, the other two unionized chains left in SoCal, still need to ratify the agreement.
