Stater Bros. President Retiring. Former Albertsons Portland Division President to Replace

Having moved this summer from West Los Angeles to Menifee, I see how popular Stater Bros. is. Much more so than Vons, Albertsons or Ralphs in this portion of Riverside County. Quite frankly, I don't get it. Their prices are nothing special. Stores are clean, aisles are wide & well stocked and customer service is somewhat better than the other 3, though. Plus they are everywhere.

I am surprised they are reaching outside the chain for a new president.

I am surprised that an Albertsons person was chosen. Albertsons is the last company I would look for expert guidance.

Stater Brothers could go down hill quite fast. Or perhaps, this is a prelude to a takeover by Albertsons. Albertsons may have planned this all along. Take over profitable small chains and add to their gigantic bloated empire. Then they will run those stores into the ground and sell off the real estate. Cerberus is the one in control here.

Albertsons seems to be doing well with United in Texas. Those stores, IMHO, are run better than their Albertsons and Safeway derived chains.

Of course an Albertsons / Stater combination will require a lot of store closures.

I imagine the state of California would block any such merger, especially after the Haggen fiasco.

Stater Bros' CEO, Pete Van Helden, is an Albertsons veteran. This is no surprise.

That probably explains what has happened to the pricing at Stater the past five or so years. Past couple trips to SoCal I found Ralphs to have lower prices on various items I was looking at (produce, drinks, dairy). Stater still looked lower on canned goods, chips, and beer.

Stater markets down to earth and runs a good clean store with fresh products, but their pricing is not nearly as great as they market it as being.
