After adding the Andronico's name to the Monterey store Albertsons/Safeway won over from Nob Hill, and possibly one other store, two "Safeway Community Markets" officially reverted to Andronico's Community Markets recently, complete with in-store signage.

Andronico's name returns
Re: Andronico's name returns
In other words, customers fled the stores after the Safeway name took over, and in a desperate attempt to regain customers, Safeway is using the Andronico's name once again.
There are many people in the Berkeley area that hate the Safeway name and would never step foot in a Safeway. In fact, there are many people who also hate Albertsons as they killed the Lucky Supermarket name and converted all the Lucky stores to Albertsons in 1999. Albertsons never recovered from the loss of loyal Lucky customers and that is why Albertsons voluntarily fled Northern California in 2007. Many people still feel animosity after all these years.
Bringing back a local grocery store name is a last ditch effort as the customer counts on these Safeway Community Markets were miserable.
Maybe if these stores were to offer more products to compete with Whole Foods and other organic grocers, these Andronico's could be more successful.
