Superior Grocers adding 2nd Bakersfield Store

Post by storewanderer »

In a former Food Maxx.

Will be interesting to see how this impacts the nearby Albertsons, which has an ultra low budget interior compared to what Albertsons was opening at the time in better neighborhoods.

Superior will be a harder competitor to go against than Food Maxx (what a joke they have become- they used to be quite effective) was.

That Albertson's decor was used in at least one Acme according to the Acme Style blog.

Yes, the Acme in Centreville. It has since been remodeled.

I'm sure only 2 stores (this Bakersfield store and the Centreville Acme) used this decor, which Acme Style calls "Crates And Stripes". This decor belongs in a discount grocery store.
At the customer service desk of this Bakersfield Albertsons, you can see a sign that says: "Albertsons: Helping Make Your Life Easier". That was their slogan from mid-2003 to early 2007.

Superior will put the Albertson's out of business.

They took over a former Albertson's in Los Angeles at the corner of La Brea Ave. & Obama Blvd. They did minimal remodeling but the store is a lot busier than it was as an Albertson's.

It still has the original floors and most of the refrigeration and the departments are still pretty much arranged the same was as before:

After making the above post I looked through all the Yelp photos and found this. It's pretty funny:

I was in that Superior and was a little surprised how little remodeling they did to it. But it worked. They got their expanded bakery, expanded hot deli, expanded meat. Those mid 90's Albertsons were pretty well designed stores. Plenty of space up front where there was video rental, photo, and customer service to add in check cashing and a few other services too. Don't they do more extensive remodeling to most stores they take over?

The lack of remodeling to the Bakersfield Albertsons by the various ownership groups (not many Albertsons today, still have the same interior they had in 2003) speaks volumes as to its performance.

Looks like a store near Seattle got this interior...

Wonder where that store was. Also it has a drop ceiling, so that may have been a remodel. Is it possible that is an old Buttrey? If we can get a clear shelf tag view every shelf tag has the store number on it.

Based on the DSD Franz display it could be in OR/WA/ID/MT I believe. UT is a remote possibility but pretty sure that is not in Utah.

Looking through their photos, I see a poster for "Wine Country" next to the bakery. Washington's wine country is around the Walla Walla area, a 4.5 hour drive from Seattle. This might be the Walla Walla store.

Looking at Historic Aerials, the Walla Walla Albertsons was rebuilt around 2003 or so. Haggen bought this store and Albertsons bought it back. Might be an original Albertsons.
This photo has the same layout: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Alber ... 18.3027612
