This would be a good Pavilions conversion.

Safeway had a store that was small and looked like this one in Walnut Creek, California. The company decided not to expand it. They built a new and larger store across the street. Albertsons seems to be open to expansions of old buildings instead of completely rebuilding.

Actually, it wouldn't. Pavilions is not a known brand in San Diego County. There's only one and it's all the way up in Carmel Valley. Keeping it VONS while upgrading the store is a smart move.

Here's a photo workup from their last remodel, which was pretty major at the time in 2009 going from the Post-Safeway Vons interior to the Lifestyle look.

How the heck is the Smart & Final on Coronado still operating? Coronado is a poor fit for S&F. I wouldn't be surprised if this one closes.

I have heard that store actually does fairly well.

S&F seems to do well in spots where I wouldn't expect it to, and does poorly in spots where I'd expect it to do well. The location would be more appropriate for Ralphs.
