"Senior shopping hours"

Post by SamSpade »

This has been making the rounds on social media sites, requesting that stores might allow a few hours at store opening for seniors and immuno-compromised customers.

This is the first store I've heard of offering it:
Nel's Bi-Lo Foods Senior Hours

New Seasons Market also extended their senior discount to all weekdays to allow more flexibility for their older customers, but anyone can shop once they are open for the day.

EDIT: Upon reading the linked article about the Los Angeles area,
Southern California-based Northgate Gonzalez Market plans to open all its 41 stores from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. for the disabled and for seniors 65 years of age and older. Noting the additional risks older adults face, Garcetti said people should allow seniors to go to the front of grocery store lines so they can get out as quickly as possible.

Good luck controlling this. Every morning at opening time the past few days in my area there are mobs of customers lined up outside Smiths and WinCo (probably Wal Mart too) and the second the doors open they swarm into the stores. I can only imagine trying to control entry to senior citizens. They will have to expose themselves to dozens of people just to make their way to the door of the grocery store.

It will work like it does for the airlines. They will make an announcement and the non-seniors will step aside out of respect just like at the airport.

Ladies and gentleman, we'd like to begin the store opening process. We are currently welcoming in seniors and other shoppers requiring special assistance. Please line-up on the blue carpeting. Thank you. Shoppers with a gold or platinum loyalty card may line-up on the red carpeting. We will welcome you in as soon as we're ready to serve you. Thank you.

Stop & Shop (New England and NY/NJ) is doing the same, and most Dollar General stores are for the first hour of their usual day as well.
