That first store looks very dire. It seems the timing of Wal Mart Supercenter entries into these markets left Smiths as the lowest hanging fruit in a number of these markets.

At least Smiths didn't waste millions remodeling these stores and making them look great like Ralphs Northern California division did to more than half of the former Albertsons they bought (and they looked fantastic) only to close them a few years later.

Interesting lighting arrangement in the second and third pictures. Kinda reminds me of how Kmart added additional strip lighting during some of the Big Kmart conversions. But this looks more like a lighting "grid" throughout the store, looks like it could be versatile for experimenting with different layouts though.

Ralphs also had a situation on the Central Coast similar to Smith's failures in MT/WY. They bought about 6 Lucky/Albertsons stores in that region. Of those, only the SLO and Los Osos stores remain open. Most of those stores closed in 2004.
Ralphs also bought an older Lucky in Bakersfield (possibly former Alpha Beta), then building some stores there. They also exited Bakersfield around that time.
Ralphs also did a nice Fresh Fare remodel to their Laguna Beach store 10 or so years ago (this was a 60's gable Albertsons)
