As we know, this is nothing new for Aldi, which is frequently accused of being "too close" to a name brand something or other.

Must be nice to have such gourmet bakeries in the supermarket.

I think M&S owned Kings (NJ) at one time.
Looking at pictures online, M&S stores look like the British equivalent to Gelson's.

Not exactly Gelsons'...the best analogy I can use would be to imagine if Sears in their absolute heyday put food shops into every single one of their stores...but even the doesn't do M&S justice. There's a really good Gourmet article from 45 years ago talking about M&S...they are ubiquitous throughout the UK, they have traditionally been utterly reliable for clothing (supposedly everyone including the queen wears M&S underpants) and they have developed the supply chains to have fresh groceries everywhere in the country, with all that implies. Very high quality fresh and prepared foods ubiquitously available throughout GB. To analogize it to the US: a touch each of Aldi, Trader Joes, Safeway/ABS, JCPenney and Sears (from the 80s)

I think Aldi does this on purpose. Free publicity for them.
