These "tidying announcements" were the topic of the closing segment of KXRK-FM (X96)'s "Radio From Hell" show for about 5 minutes.
The podcast should be available later today.

It was ridiculed to no end.

Audio at 154:15 aka 2 hours, 34 minutes, 15 seconds until close of show.

That's very funny! Love the part about the music and feather duster.

Thanks for posting.

PS: I kid you not, but one of the assistant managers at the local Safeway had a feather duster in his belt.

When I am in QFC, I hear an announcement that goes something like this: “Boop, boop, boop, boop! QFC associates, it’s time for our hourly, sparkle and shine walk!” Or something of that ilk! It is so canned and creepy!

Is there still real “live” paging at Fred Meyer?

Tonight I was at the Fry's Marketplace in Apache Junction and the "Hourly Conditioning" announcement came over the PA. In the bakery the associate was cleaning out the donut case using a feather duster. No singing, though.

Yes, they absolutely still page.

One specific example I can think of is the "closing in 10 minutes" announcement.

This evening I went to Fry's for the first time in a couple of months. As soon as I walked in the creepy "top of the hour conditioning" announcement came on. That's old news by now, but the brand-new weirdly annoying thing is at the self checkout. The voice that announces prices and reminds you to put the item in the bag was cranked way up. If that wasn't bad enough, they play an annoying little tune when the credit card is approved, the receipt prints, and it is time to take the bags. It was just strange.

I'm wondering if they are trying to annoy us into shopping someplace else.

I noticed at Fred Meyer that the top of the hour chime plays but there are no words after the chime about the top of the hour. Kind of funny.

But Fred Meyer still has the ghost security announcements and a lot of other annoyances. They even seem to interrupt songs. They really need to clean this up. It makes the shopping experience a bit chaotic.

Also, I am glad I have not experienced the self checkout ending with a song at Smiths or Fred Meyer. That sounds very creepy. Imagine the self check attendant hearing that hundreds of times in a shift. Yikes... Why are they concentrating on crap like that when they don't even have NFC working on their pinpads like every other grocery store?

I was back at the same Fry's today and it was maddening to listen to all of the little songs going off. The attendant was pretty annoyed. I felt bad for her.

I am praying to the technology gods that they don't deploy that nonsense at the new downtown location. I want to support the store, but I also do not want to be driven crazy while checking out.
