Stores Returning to Regular Hours

Post by Alpha8472 »

Walgreens returned to regular hours across the country recently. On May 18, California Walgreens resumed previous hours of being open 24 hours or closing at 10 PM. Rumors have it that Walmart stores and their pharmacies will return to regular hours on June 8. They will go back to closing at Midnight. Walmart has started to accept returns of some items. The lines at Walmart are ridiculously long. The lines were stretching all the way into the aisles. They should be open until midnight to get the crowds under control.

Will CVS follow? CVS has been closing at 9 PM or earlier in my area when they used to be 24 hours.

Safeway was closing at 9 PM, but in recent weeks they started closing at 11 PM. Raley's and most Nob Hill Foods seem to be 11 PM except for the very low volume Nob Hill Foods in Walnut Creek, California that closes at 9 PM.

California just announced that indoor retail can open statewide with county approval. The indoor malls can now reopen. Salons and barbershops are still closed. Massage parlors are still closed. However, I see many male customers leaving through the back doors of the local massage parlor. The lights are on for some reason.

Casinos will reopen in Nevada around June 4 with pretty limited operations. This will mean a lot more people working late at night, etc. I hope Wal Mart will get their late hours back soon. The 8:30 thing is a joke, the store still has 100-200 people inside at 8:30 and not everyone is checked out until closer to 9 PM. At least it is a fairly "lax" closing time, at least in the location near me, since employees are still working in the store after 8:30.

CVS already returned some stores to old hours here a couple weeks ago. Rite Aid never cut hours in the first place. Raleys cut hours at Food Source but not any of the Raleys banner stores.

So far the Kohl's, Dillard's, etc. reopened with limited hours. It will be interesting to see if they go back to 9 PM soon or what.

In visiting the local Albertsons store (and a quick check of the Safeway website), most locations here seem to be opening earlier (ie. 6 am) and closing later, in some cases their previous normal hours.

In this area, they had cut back over the past few years, and we still won't really have a 24 hour store, although one that was open 5 am to 1 am is back to 6 am to 1 am operation.

I haven't been to WinCo Foods since March, so I do not know if they are returning to 24/7 operation. They do seem to continue to be busy.

Fred Meyer stores are back to the newly announced 6 am opening, traditional 11 pm closing.
QFC stores are 7 am to 11 pm, a substantial expansion from 8 to 8. Trader Joe's remain 9 am to 8 pm, opening an hour later than previously and closing an hour earlier.

H-E-B went from 8 am to 8 pm to 7 am to 10 pm. CVS and Walgreens seem to have been operating at close at midnight for the last few weeks now as normal (due to my schedule, I've observed when they shut off a lot of the lights around that time).

The only stores in my area, Riverside County, CA, that still have abnormal hours are 99 Cents Only Stores (8 am to 8 pm, was 7 am to 10 pm, previously) and Winco that was 24 hours but is as of last week is 5 am to 12 midnight.

Ralphs has not completely returned to normal hours. Stores that were 24 hours now close at either Midnight or 2 am and reopen at 5 or 6 am. There were no 24 hour Ralphs in my area and those in my area now operate at pre-Coronavirus hours.

Vons, Albertsons and Stater Bros. now close at regular hours but some locations that opened at 5 or 6 am now open at 7 am.

CVS in my city is back to 24/7.

On another note, Food 4 Less in SoCal still has not returned with an ad.

Kroger operated Foods Co. stores in the San Francisco Bay Area also do not have a weekly ad. They get enough business already from all of the people who are out of work. The unemployed and those with little money flock to Food4Less and Foods Co. In some cases there are better deals at other supermarkets.

I just checked CVS again. Some stores in my area are now 24 hours again. A few CVS stores cut hours a while back and are keeping the entire store closed Sundays. These must be really low volume stores to be closed on Sundays.

Reno WinCo is 5 AM to Midnight as of tonight. Interesting we get the shorter hours too.

I don't really shop between Midnight and 5 AM more than a few times a year, so it really doesn't matter.

Smiths is closing at 11 PM now and it is not clear if they plan to go back to 24 hour operation or what. Safeway is the same thing in NorCal they still had a number of 24 hour stores and none have reverted back yet.

FoodsCo in NorCal has a largely captive audience at most of its stores. They are operating in primarily underserved neighborhoods and they are serving a need for a shopper who does not want to pay the high prices of the usual NorCal grocers. The stores are a lousy experience, dirty, and poorly run (really they could staff with more cashiers and try to clean up the aisles a little). If I was near one in NorCal I'd probably stomach it once or twice a month to pick up some Kroger items but really it is not a great experience. I am not sure how much the ad really matters. No paper ad will certainly reduce litter in the carts and around the store entrances. I think stores may want to rethink the paper ads at this point to reduce contact. I was really surprised Safeway came back with a bunch of in ad coupons the past two weeks in NorCal- now encouraging the customer to touch and hand the cashier coupons? Okay.

DC stores, if anything have trimmed hours further since the beginning of this. Giant closes at 8 (after 1st scaling back to 10), Whole Foods and Trader Joe's at 7. CVS has kept some 24 hour stores on that schedule but cut back at others and Walgreens has scaled back hours, too.

Central Phoenix is a mixed bag. CVS and Sprouts are back to regular hours, including at the 24 hour stores. Safeway still closes at 9:00, Fry's is now open until 11:00 (extended from 9:00, but usually 1:00 AM), Target closes at 9:00, and I don't know what Walgreens and Walmart are doing.
