Meat - Large Pack vs. Small Pack

Post by storewanderer »

I have been a fan of Raleys meat department because they just did sale pricing at one price on meat in any size package, and tended to have mostly small sized packages on display as a result of this, and few to no large packs depending on the location. I really liked this as there was a great selection of cuts to select from in small packs and if you wanted a bigger quantity you could just buy multiple small packages...

Well, that changed today. Raleys has now gone to a program where the large pack is at one sale price and the small pack is at another sale price. So for instance NY Steak 4.97/lb in large pack 3+ steaks (small pack 6.99/lb sale) and Ground Beef 80/20 2.97lb large pack 3lbs+ (small pack 3.99/lb sale).

We will see how this works out. Raleys moved away from large packs years ago for shrink reasons. They have gone back and forth on this over the years. Maybe store volumes have picked up enough that those shrink concerns are no longer relevant.

Always remember one of the old Frank McMinn radio ads of the 90's being critical of the other stores large pack sales and noting at Raleys you would get the same great sale price on whatever size package you wanted. Back then most chains sold the small pack at .20-.50/lb above the advertised "large pack" sale price so it wasn't really that big of a thing. Albertsons you could go to the service meat counter and get whatever portion you wanted at the lowest advertised price. Now with some chains offering a sale price on large pack only and selling small pack at regular price it is a much bigger deal.

At least Raleys isn't trying to do two large packs with two different prices like Safeway does (the "mega pack" and the "value pack").
