Supervalu discontinuing individual store brands

I find this somewhat interesting. Although, from a distribution standpoint, it makes sense to simplify things with one national brand, elimination of a store brand in any chain results in some confusion. In the case of Albertsons, they were known for having a very successful private label program, and the Albertsons brand was well-established. It may not make much difference on canned goods, but on items such as fresh dairy it makes people question the source of such products.

Once again another big corporation dismisses trusted brand names.

Remember, when Albertson's got rid of the trusted Lucky name. The customers rebelled and sales volumes were never the same again.

The customers have grown to trust brand names and getting rid of them will be damaging to customer loyalty.

Supervalu needs every single customer they can get. The loyal ones are the ones that most likely to take offense. Supervalu can't compete on price. Their individual store brand names are one of the few things that they still have left.

This is a big mistake.

I have mixed feelings about SVU. Their stores in SoCal look good, as a whole. Their stores up in WA mostly look terrible, seem to have major service issues, and like they could close tomorrow and nobody would care.
