The title says it all. Fred's announced yesterday a plan to close 159 stores throughout its operating territory:

The vast majority of these closings appear to be stores without Pharmacies, and some recently lost to Walgreens. They are leaving Texas with this closing.

The McGregor (TX) store was the closest to me, but the farthest from their territory, so I'm not surprised to see it closing but not too surprised about it.

Fred's closing additional store locations is not surprising. It could fold within one or two years.

Fred's is closing an additional 104 stores. There are a few in the Memphis area where I live as well as North Mississippi close by. I am doubtful the chain will make it much longer. After this round of closures they will be down below 300 stores and I suspect it will be tough for them to survive with such a small, scattered footprint.
