Macy's To Open Smaller Stores In Off Mall Locations

Post by Alpha8472 »

Macy's to test smaller format stores in off mall locations. Perhaps this will work out for them. The huge old stores do not seem to be working for them. Perhaps these little ones will bring in the customers.

Macy's hasn't done particularly well with their standalone stores. They will need to do some sort of discount format if they expect this to work. It's another chapter in how Macy's is struggling to find their identity.

Initially when Backstage was rolled out they were opening them away from regular Macy's Stores. Then Wall Street pressured them that they were moving too slowly on it so Macy's came up with the "store within a store" concept that has allowed them to roll out Backstage at a much faster clip.

Now we are back to this again where they say they will open up smaller stores off mall. Well, there will be no shortage of spaces for them to open these stores... we will see how many of these stores actually open up before Macy's changes course again at the whim of Wall Street.

They easily could go into unused spaces in lifestyle and big box centers----esp. now, a lot of those places have 60-80K sf spots open where someone has left. Kohls seems to do well with this. JC Penney started in this direction but quickly stopped--would be interesting to know what happened. Ironically, these stores probably would have been much like the ones they opened in the 50s and early 60s in size and selection.

The Backstage is basically a recreation of the budget/basement store that all but the most upscale stores maintained for decades. It was funny to see the fuss that was made about that.
