Chicago has its own unique problems.

Imagine the year is 2080. Walmart, Target, Costco and Macy's are nothing but memories.

Sears has just put out a press release announcing the latest round of closures, including 2 Sears stores and 1 Kmart store, bringing the count down to 4 Sears and 2 Kmarts remaining in the country.

I went to the Grass Valley, CA Kmart and noticed they have inventory tags from the inventory contractor hanging all over the store. They also have received a good lot of various back to school merchandise and have some items (crayons, glue, and the like) actually tagged with sale tags.

Clothing area looked as if it had been restocked as well.

Hardlines area still very limited and 40% of the sales floor is blocked off.

In the home category they have an aisle or two of US POLO ASSN sheets at price points way too high for Kmart.

Store had almost no customers, no music playing, and a really weird vibe. I have never been a fan of this particular Kmart for some reason I cannot exactly state. Ironic it is one of the last ones left.

Kmart now has 17 stores left. How long will this go on?

Sears Raleigh, NC
Sears Brooklyn, NY

Sears Harrisburg, PA

Leaves 19 Sears and about 16 Kmart.

How long... can this go on?

Interestingly enough, the website still shows 35 Sears stores and 22 Kmart stores in operation.

Pretty sad when the company itself is struggling to keep an accurate account of its stores,

I wonder if their website takes orders for the closed stores still? It's like they let the entire IT and Ecomm team go. What kind of retailer can't even keep an accurate list of stores that are still open? Sears.

I just looked up Sears locations on Google Maps, and the location that used to be at Stonebriar Centre here in DFW is still being reported as open on Google (despite being closed for 2 years now).

BTW, I know it's not considered proper to criticize a judge, but I still think the judge who oversaw (or is still overseeing?) Sears' bankruptcy case made an error by letting this slow moton train wreck continue, instead of just forcing Lampert to liquidate all stores immediately in 2019.

2-3 years later, it pretty much ended up in the same place the Judge was hoping could be avoided (which we all knew it couldn't).

I think Schaumburg (Woodfield Mall) was their last store in their home state of Illinois.
