Target pulls trading cards from shelves

Post by Brian Lutz »

A couple of days ago I visited the local Target store in Lake Stevens, and saw a notice on the front door of the store that as of May 14th, all MLB, NFL, NBA and Pokemon trading cards were no longer being sold in Target stores until further notice. For the time being they are still selling the cards online ("while supplies last") and it appears that some collectible card games such as Magic the Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh were still on the shelves as of the last time I visited the store. I know collectible cards have experienced a major surge in popularity recently, but wasn't aware that it was enough to cause safety issues within the stores.

There is a tremendous amount of theft. Some retailers would be wise to keep them behind a counter. Then they could control the scalpers who are selling this stiff.

I made the mistake of running into Star Wars toys scalpers years ago. They were ruthless.

When I was a kid the best place to buy sports trading cards was Longs. There were certain locations that handled the trading cards and others that did not. Next to an independent shop, they had the most selection (one of the locations in particular had as good of a selection as the independent shops with the wall behind half of its photo counter filled with the trading cards- the other half of the wall behind the counter with guns and ammo- how times change). Eventually all of that got torn out in favor of things like one hour photo, etc. Longs never did bother to put the trading cards into their POS system- they always rang up hand keyed price as "taxable mdse." It wasn't too long after Longs got the POS system that things like this went away.
